I've just read that Moltex Oko disposable nappies biodegrade in 8 weeks in a worm composter

I just wondered, has anyone tried home composting their nappies? In fact, is it even legal to dispose of human waste in this way? I know it's not recommended to put dog or cat faeces in composters because of the risk of spreading disease.

We I asked the council if I could do this for the Nursery - but they said no

You need a very big composted/wormery I understand

Enid · 18/07/2007 16:45

i would NOT like the idea of shitty nappies in my wormery

I think meat eaters poo is very bad news

IntergalacticWalrus · 18/07/2007 16:46

Agree, don;t do it, twill make your compost shite (no pun inteneded)

It'll stink and it will attract all sorts of pests

tut!!! you don't compost human faeces! however human urine is a compost accelerant so wee only nappies could, in theory, be composted. i think you would need a lot of veg matter in your composter as well to get the right mix.

goingfor3 · 18/07/2007 16:54

I've heard it okay to put wee nappies in a wormery because it breaks down faster and is hotter than a composter. Nappies of any kind are not to go in a composter.

daisyandbabybootoo · 18/07/2007 16:56

According to The Nappy Lady website Moltex Oko get their green credentials from the manufacturing side of things, and that they are no more biodegradable than any other disposable nappy

As such, i wouldn't have thought they were compostable at home at all.

IntergalacticWalrus · 18/07/2007 17:08

agree urine is good.

I s3nd DP down the garden after dark to piss in the compost bin

Enid · 18/07/2007 17:57

dhs precious man piss is used as compost accelerant AND badger deterrent

tis a valuable commodity in the country

LizaRose · 18/07/2007 18:18

This seems to contradict the bit about the nappies not biodegrading. And apparently wormeries can deal with the dangerous micro-organisms.

Is myb compost bin now technically a wormery as full of ruit flies and their larvae??

LizaRose · 18/07/2007 18:24

You can buy composting worms by the kilo from companies like wiggly wigglers and add them to a conventional composter. They are a native species so it doesn't matter if they escape into your garden.

i had heard you had to buy special worms - like turbo womrs or something! urgh - think id rather just use cloth!
