Dd will be 11 months next month when we go away and there is a splash center etc for baby's and children blah blah, question is how long can she stay in the water for? Some say 20 minutes! Which I thought wasn't that long but maybe it is? And swimming pants I've been told to get? Does she need a certain suit to wear in water? Thanks for any replies. I've never taken her in water other than to give her a bath Grin

Why just 20 minutes? Let her play as long as she's happy to. It's not like she's going to melt.

ShesABelter · 09/05/2019 15:28

Can't say I have ever limited how long mine were in the water at that age to be honest and never knew there was a recommended limit. They will quickly let you know if they have had enough. I'd get her swim nappies and a uv suit.

@Aquamarine1029 hi thanks I know it sounded so stupid! Glad to know that's bs!

Just to add... My children both learned to swim by 6 months and they would have stayed in the pool forever if I had let them. I find that 20 minute thing really odd!

winenowpls · 09/05/2019 15:30

@ShesABelter thank you! I didn't think that either but maybe it's 20 minutes if there newborn?

Those surf suit all-in-one sun protection outfits are great for swimming as they let you get a better grip on a slippery wet baby!

20 minutes is a fair amount of time in a pool that's not warm like a bath - play it by ear though, you should be able to tell if your baby is cold/miserable and judge it accordingly.

She will need swim nappies - the swim school I used insisted on a disposable one with a reusable one over the top. They don't hold wee in butut they do stop poo!

happyhillock · 09/05/2019 15:31

20 minutes isn't that long, you don't need a special swimsuit, you can get swim nappy there disposable and like underwear

Daisypod · 09/05/2019 15:31

I think it depends. At our local pool it is freezing and my kids at that age would be done after 20 mins but at center Paris where it is warm we would stay for hours so I would say it can depend on the temp mostly.

winenowpls · 09/05/2019 15:31

@Aquamarine1029 that's impressive! And I know it did sound very odd but like said above maybe it was for newborns within a 20 minute rule?Confused no idea! Glad I don't have to go into water and have to be done within that time 😂

She can swim as long as she is warm enough/cool enough depending on where you are going. Babies don’t absorb water so she will not get big and mushy.
Sunsuits are brilliant, but just a swim nappy is fine.

Pipandmum · 09/05/2019 15:33

Baby will need a swim nappy and I kinda remember there are special swim suits too for babies. The nappy will get wet but will keep anything else inside!
Never heard of time limit.

winenowpls · 09/05/2019 15:33

Swim nappies don't hold wee!? Sorry if I sound stupid but what do they actually do then:0

winenowpls · 09/05/2019 15:34

Thanks for replies everyone I'll defiantly get a suit and swim nappies then!:)) thanks for advice on time to!

OP posts:
Aquamarine1029 · 09/05/2019 15:34

Swim nappies are made to hold poo so it doesn't get in the water. The chlorine they use kills any germs so urine isn't an issue.

BlingLoving · 09/05/2019 15:35

Yes, there are some guidelines for very young babies as they get cold much quicker than adults or older children. But outdoors at that age I would imagine would be fine. nt least because you'd be able to figure out if the baby was upset/cold etc.

winenowpls · 09/05/2019 15:37

@Aquamarine1029 cheers for that!x

@BlingLoving I believe the center is indoors. The baby part anyway! But I'd take her outside too just maybe not too long :D

stucknoue · 09/05/2019 15:54

They let you know when they have had enough, don't worry! Other than a uv protection suit if outside, there's no need for a baby swim costume, you can buy them but they are not necessary

winenowpls · 09/05/2019 16:54

@stucknoue thank you!:D

there's no need for a baby swim costume

It's far easier to get a grip on a baby in a swim suit though.
