This will sound ridiculous, but my first was a winter baby, so layers and layers.
I’m due a boy in August and wondering what kind of clothing we will really need?
DD was like a radiator, so I’d my thinking short sleeved sleepsuit types things not enough when they are tiny?

My dd was born in the heatwave last summer. Lots of thin cotton rompers with sleeveless body suits for overnight. She says just in a nappy for the majority of her first few months during the day.

We got bought some really nice clothes that she just couldn't wear as it was far too hot!

DD was born last summer in the heatwave.

We didn’t use many long sleeved vests - I had her in them a couple of times if I knew we’d be outside and I wanted to shield her a bit from sunburn, but otherwise just short sleeved. I must have given away about 20 long sleeved vests totally unworn.

We did use long sleeved/legged sleepsuits at night, as she was too small for sleeping bags until around 3/4 months, so just had them and a very light cellular blanket with no vest underneath.

We used a lot of light, short legged and short sleeved rompers in the day - like babygrows but with short arms and legs. Otherwise she spent a lot of time in just a short sleeved vest.

The only other essentials were a sunhat that fit and a UV swimsuit once we found one small enough - with long arms and legs. Not for swimming so much as the very hot days where I worried about the sun.

As you might be able to tell though, I was a nervous first time mum paranoid about sunburn!!

A 1 tog Grobag-style sleeping bag is handy in the summer. If it’s really warm you can put the baby to bed in just nappy and sleeping bag, or a shortsleeved vest + sleeping bag. Useful for fevers too, if you don’t want to overdo layers.

My dd was born at the end of the summer, and had sleeveless vests and baby gros. He still needed a hat for the first day or so while we were in hosp. You can’t plan for the weather! It might be a damp cool August, and you will need warm clothes for the autumn anyhow. It was easier with my spring born dd as she had a full summers wear out of the short sleeved/ legged rompers.

It’s also difficult to know what size they will be born and how quick will grow.

My dd was tiny and we had to go out and buy early baby/ tiny bany/ new baby sizes, none of which I had as I thought 0-3 months was the first size!

Don’t buy too much stuff; accept handmedowns and wait and see.

lots of short sleeved vests and leggings. easy to layer up when it was chilly. the days when all she needed was a romper were actually quite rare. by mid August she'd missed most of the really hot weather.

Baby born in last year's heatwave too,he spend most of the time in short sleeve rompers. At night he would wear a short sleeve vest and grobag. I would advice getting a 0.5 tog travel grobag. For some reason the travel ones are made of a different type of material and are basically like a sheet. We're an absolute lifesaver in last year's scorcher!

My June baby mostly wore long sleeved babygrows with only a nappy underneath or short sleeved rompers depending on how hot it was. A couple of cardigans are good for those in between days as it’s much easier to take a cardigan on/off than a vest! Overnight we used the love to dream swaddle with only a nappy underneath if it was warm. We didn’t use grow bags until she was about 2 months old so you may need a warmer weight by then as you’re having an August baby.
