Baby blocked nose nightmare!

Alicia870 · 07/05/2019 20:20

Mamas please help me out! My 7 month old is terribly congested and has a blocked nose which gets so much worse at night. Last night she was basically up all night and is in rotten form all day.
I went to pharmacy today and they have me saline spray and a plug in vapour from calpol. Have used the spray, have the plug in in and also put some olbas oil on her baby grow.
I put a v shaped pillow underneath her fitted sheet to prop her up a bit as it was a lot worse when she's lying flat. But poor thing is so restless, she usually has dummy at night but can't breathe with it in and can't get over to sleep without it. Is there anything else I can do to help her?

Snuffle babe on her feet. Mines is 5months and has had a cold and it really helped her. I was going to tie a bit of cotton hankie to her sleeping bit but someone advised me to rub it on her feet after a bath and it definitely helped mine.

Sleeping bit= cot. Fml dunno where that came from 😂😂

Steam.
Hang up damp washing in her room.
Bowl of hot water under the cot.
It is so hard when they are little.

I remember the panic when my baby had that. In case you breastfeed, then milk in the nose did help and was told to me by SIL who did it, too. If you don't, or no longer, can you give her lots to drink and try to keep the air in the room as moist as possible, or take her to the bathroom and put on the shower for steam? It will help to losen it up.

Neighneigh · 07/05/2019 20:25

Try saline drops rather than spray too, it's a bit more subtle and worked amazingly for us. Those plug in calpol smelly things are good too for night time (I think it's calpol)

Have her in the bathroom with you whilst you shower. & get yourself a snot sucker! They are brilliant! I have one where you suck on one end of the tub and it all collects in a bulb at the bottom. When DS has a cold (he’s 11 months) he doesn’t sleep much without me holding him upright or letting him nap in his rocking chair so he’s sat up a bit.

Tube*

Alienspaceship · 07/05/2019 20:34

Sit in a steamy bathroom with her.

ToeSocks · 07/05/2019 20:35

Put a towel under matter so they sleep lightly raised , pharmacy sell calpol vapour that plugs in the wall , I love it when I have a cold too

managedmis · 07/05/2019 20:38

Snot sucker.
Vicks in a bowl of hot water.

mommybear1 · 07/05/2019 20:38

It's an acquired skill but a snot sucker is a must, steam to lose it, snufflebabe rub or baby vicks on feet, suck the snot Envyand then pop on a folded towel to give a bit of an incline. The calpol plug ins are great - it's horrible OP but it passes quickly Thanks

Alicia870 · 07/05/2019 20:43

Thanks everyone! Much appreciated. I had a snot sucker months ago but I think I got frustrated with it and threw it out. Can anyone suggest a decent one that works?
As she's in her cot now for the night, should I pop in a bowl of hot water with olbas oil under the cot? That's all I have! The carpool vapour thing is already plugged in

I couldn’t get on with those snot sucker things, if you keep their mouth closed and suck their snot out then spit it in the sink it works really well.

Aozora13 · 07/05/2019 20:52

We use the Nose Frieda where you physically suck it up the tube (we also have one with a bulb to pump but it doesn’t work). Squirt the saline up each nostril first. DH has more success than me, you have to suck quite long and hard sometimes Blush. It’s well grim but does the trick!

Sipperskipper · 07/05/2019 20:55

Vicks humidifier / vaporiser with menthol pads (about £70 but lasts forever). Fills the room with menthol steam all night.
Vicks on chest, back and feet, then socks on
Saline nose spray, then 10 mins later snot suck (nosefrieda is the best one I’ve used). DD would scream whilst it was being done, but so much more settled when she could suck her dummy.
Calpol before bed- I always thought DD can’t tell me if she has a sore throat/headache etc, and I usually do with a rotten cold, so I would give her a dose to cover any discomfort.

One like this. It’s actually £46 on Amazon at the moment.

DD (now 2) has currently got hers running as has a cold for the 100000000th time. We’ve definitely got our money’s worth from it!

avocuddl · 07/05/2019 21:36

Sterimar spray is the best thing and only thing that worked for me. Do a spray of that then the snufflebabe snot sucker and worked a treat

RosieEffect · 08/05/2019 12:28

I second the Nose Frida. Best thing for relieving a snotty nose.
