Need advice on 10 month old weaning

Yes I know I should have it all figured out by now but I don't 😣
My dd is 10 months tomorrow, and so far from what I've seen other parents doing with food etc she isn't having anything like that.
I don't have a time frame, eg when she has snacks when she has dinner when she has tea etc. It's all muddled up and tbh I know it's not good. I do need a routine for it. Also the problem is is when I do offer food it's like she isn't really interested but when I offer milk she loves it (she still has 5 a day, I am trying to lower it a bit) she's just had two spoons of chopped up pasta and sauce and that's all she wants, im now going to give her some milk, but is it normal for a baby who's nearly one to not be as interested in food as I thought? Can this make her ill not eating food enough??i feel like I've done this all wrong😰

The advice now is no bottles after 1 so you're doing the right thing by thinking about getting her eating more solids. You can do this by replacing one bottle a day with a meal. Most people start with the mid afternoon and mid morning bottles, then lunchtime one so all they're getting after a few weeks is one in the morning and one before bed.

I brought the baby led weaning book, and the advice in there is "food before 1 is just for fun" I now have a healthy 2yr old who eats pretty much everything x

If you can I’d steer towards non sweet flavours as well
Eg plain porridge rather than banana

In the morning instead of giving milk straight away try giving a baby cereal like baby porridge or baby rice mixed with a bit of mashed banana or cooked apple or a dab or unsalted peanut butter mixed with the milk first. Make it really sloppy do it's the consistency if runny yogurt do the baby can duck it off the spoon, then give the rest of the milk. This is a good good intro. I wouldn't expect ypur baby to have more than a few spoons to start with. By mixing it with the milk and giving it before the milk drink it means the taste is more familiar and they won't be full from the liquid. Good luck

I have the opposite problem of an 8 month old who’d much rather have food than milk and has already dropped his milk intake significantly. He’s on 3 bottles a day now but won’t always take it all. I was stressing about that but he’s happy and gaining weight and his diet is varied so I’ve decided not to stress about it. Have you tried much in the way of finger foods with your little one? My son was a bit of a spoon refuser from the get-go and loves feeding himself although he now will happily devour yoghurt from a spoon for breakfast. Bread fingers are a favourite of his and he loves feeding himself fruit such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. I found having a fairly consistent routine with milk and food helpful as he expects milk and food at different times. Our day looks something like this:

6.45ish milk
8.00 Breakfast
11.30 lunch
2.30 milk
4.30 dinner
6.30 milk

@Mintandthyme what is wrong with banana porridge? hardly like giving them a chocolate bar is it. Get a grip. The flavour makes itmore appealing for them to eat at an early time in the morning. its FRUIT flavour

Chippychipsforme · 08/05/2019 09:43

@itscallednickingbentcoppers - can you clarify? I was told it's best to be off baby bottles by 1 for their teeth but can still have formula, cow's milk or alternative milk but preferably in a sippy cup. As OP is only young herself, think it's best to be clear what "no bottles" means.

@boboo18

Ingredients in banana porridge

Flours (37%, Rice, Maize, Millet), Demineralised Whey Powder (20%, from Milk), Skimmed Milk Powder (17%), Maltodextrin, Whole Milk Powder (5%), Dried Banana prepared from 33g of Banana, Milk Protein, Sustainable Palm Oil, Flavouring,

I think plain ordinary good quality porridge oats without palm oil, malodextrin and flavouring might be better for a baby. But go knock yourself out with your FRUIT flavour

My DS was a late weaner. What really worked for us was a Peer Lunch Group at our local Children's Centre (SureStart). For a week, I would take DS to the centre for lunch where he would sit down with a group of babies around his age (he was 11 months and the group ranged from 6-12 months). For some reason, sitting and eating with a group seemed to kick start his interest in food.

Have a read of The Gentle Eating Book by Sarah Ockwell-Smith. She also posts lots of very helpful info on social media about all things baby related.

Sounds like you're a brilliant mum anyway but this book might give you a bit of reassurance.
