6.5 year old - totally personality change!

And I am not handling it well! I feel totally blindsided by it. He was/ used to be/ hopefully still is a very sweet, kind hearted, gentle boy.

Lately he is rude, dismissive, rolling his eyes, says hurtful things and generally impatient and frustrated.

He has two younger sisters. The four year old annoys him and he adores the toddler. Which I guess is pretty normal but it saddens me he’s so rude/ impatient with the four year old.

I don’t know how to talk to him/ get through to him. He used to respond well to switching round what he’d done in any given situation and asking him how he’d feel if X had done that to him. Now he rolls his eyes and says “I don’t care” or “whatever”. He’s six! It’s like his going on 15.

Is this a normal kind of phase or should I be concerned? I don’t handle it well - should I be more patient (whilst still setting boundaries?) I mostly feel shocked at how unpleasant he is so tend to really tell him off.

He’s just been diagnosed with absence seizures and we have a neurology appointment soon.

He's probably picking this behaviour up at school

It’s the age where boys realise their mums aren’t the whole world and they start listening to friends at school more.

Boys usually have a testosterone increase at the age of 7. Maybe hit him a bit early?

I honestly think I am handling it so badly. It’s so much easier with the younger two but I suddenly feel out of my depth with DS.

His behaviour is unacceptable and you need to make that very clear. Have a talk with him about your expectations and the consequences he will face if he breaks your rules. Tell him it is perfectly fine to get frustrated or annoyed, but it is not ok to treat anyone poorly. If he feels he needs space, he can go to his room and calm down. As for the way he is speaking back to you and rolling his eyes, that nonsense needs to end TODAY. Do not tolerate that level of disrespect. Stay calm with him, and don't shout. Tell him what the rules now are and DO NOT waver.
