5 day old cries to be fed but just sucks the teat?

Hi it’s our first baby as you could probably tell, he cries to be fed every hour or two. Sometimes he does drink a lot other times he just sucks on to the teat, would a dummy help him? Or has anyone else come across this? Thank you

At that age their tummy is teeny, can only hold an oz or two so keep doing what you're doing.

Sorry posted too soon but meant to say, it's totally normal. Dummies can be helpful for some babies but then it can be difficult to spot signs of hunger if baby is sucking a dummy.

If he's sucking but not feeding, he's probably doing it for comfort. Same thing happened with mine, we did end up getting a dummy, which proved a big comfort. It's been a while, but I seem to remember you can get dummies specifically for the really young babies.
Obviously do check he's not hungry first tho.

I'd try a dummy, if Baby is hungry it won't satisfy them - they will let you know they want the real thing!

Mintedlamb thanks for your reply. How long should it take him to drink 2oz sometimes it can take baby 1 hour as we have to prompt him to drink. Did you get this too?

Brightlightsbigcity how old were your babies when you gave them a dummy?

I can't remember, tbh, but I had been completely against dummies before DC were born, so I may have held off for a few weeks with the first. I do remember ringing the health visitor or whoever at some stupid time of night, as I was breastfeeding, but baby was just sitting there, not feeding, but crying whenever they were removed! This was in the first few days of them being at home, so I don't think it would have taken long to realise a dummy was better than constant crying! I didn't have anything against a dummy the second time round!

Newborns need to be fed every one to two hours or so.

We had this for the first few weeks. Used to take over an hour then before you know it it's time for the next feed! You have my sympathies and I promise it gets better!

Our DS had tongue tie and it helped massively when that was cut. We also ended up changing to mam bottles as baby was struggling on the more rounded TT teats but he was a prem baby.
