Baby has gained almost 5lbs in seven weeks!

Hi all.

My DD is now seven weeks old, but had her six week review today. She was quite small for her gestational age at birth (weighed 6lb 6oz despite being born at 41 weeks). However, she only lost 3% of her birth weight and at 12 days old was 7lb 6oz.

Today, she weighed 10lbs 13oz! The health visitor was happy with this, but it seems like a lot of weight to gain in just seven weeks! DD is thriving, very alert and content, so I’m not overly worried. Just surprised! Did anyone else’s babe gain a lot of weight?

Pics of my DD just because ❤️

Oh, and I’m combination feeding.

No experience as I had tongue tie and feeding issues which meant my little one didn’t pile on the weight to begin with as he should have done. But just had to say she isn’t SO cute - looks absolutely perfect! If the HV is happy with the growth chart then I wouldn’t worry.

Bit insensitive to post OP considering there’s lots of people struggling to get their babies to gain weight and are genuinely worried.

DS gained a pound a week from 7lb 3 when born 3 weeks early to 10lb 10 on his due date to 20lb 11oz at the months old. He had silent reflux and would suck a lot for comfort, and then do the most amazing projectile vomits. He was formula fed.

DD was born late at 7lb 13oz and only put on a couple of ounces a week and it felt so odd, but she had not silent reflux and screamed most of the time and found feeding really painful

She's beautiful OP

I'd say it's normal, my dd gained similar although it was a couple of years ago now so I can't remember the weights! I do remember some of the babies at groups always seemed huge (like my dd) and some were tiny, they've all evened out now at 3/4 though.

Ignore the strop from pp, you're daughter is adorable!

@Norrisskipjack, I can assure you that’s not my intention and if I have upset anyone I apologise unequivocally. But I have a genuine question and just because I’m not OVERLY worried doesn’t mean I don’t have some concerns. Surely rapid weight gain can also be a sign of potential issues? I’m a FTM and I don’t know what’s normal and what isn’t. Surely if I have questions I should be able to voice them?

Again, I’m not meaning to be insensitive. Truly. If you were upset by my post I apologise. Sad

And thank you everyone! It’s reassuring to know others have experienced similar.

I’m sure it’s not your intention, she’s gorgeous by the way!

Charley50 · 02/05/2019 18:31

She looks both gorgeous and mischievous!! DS was the same. Small at birth then put on a pound a week until he was a big round pudding! He slimmed down when he started crawling.

How is she doing on the centile lines? My first was born on the 2nd at 6lb, dropped to the 0.4th at a couple of weeks and then gradually climbed to the 98th by about 9 months (he's still between 91st and 98th at 3 yrs old). He had IUGR i.e. my placenta hadn't been working correctly, that wasn't picked up when I was pregnant. The HVs commented quite a bit when he was younger about the amount of weight he was packing on, but the hospital consultant who we were seeing for developmental checks said it was fine. My second DS, though I haven't had him weighed since 6 weeks, is I think tracking the 50th nicely at 7 months. Rapid climbing up centiles is sometimes a sign of other things but not in our case, which is why I asked about centiles.

My son was born 6 weeks premature. He was 4 lbs 9 when he was born and now at 21 weeks weight 17 lbs 8!! He's a chubby!! But he's happy and healthy and eats when he wants (he is bottle fed). Everyone is happy with how he is going so I'm just gonna go with it!

JuniLoolaPalooza · 02/05/2019 19:32

My DS gained a lb a week for the first few weeks. It was a total shock as my DD was very slow. It was nice not to worry about weight gain but I still worried he was gaining too much which might cause issues down the line when it slowed down.
It slowed down at about 4 months (and he's barely bigger than he was then tbh!).

MummyParanoia101 · 02/05/2019 19:36

Perfectly normal! She really is gorgeous 😍

User10987654321 · 02/05/2019 19:38

Mine both gained 1-2oz per day for the first couple of months, going from dainty newborns to alright chunks by the time they were 12 weeks! I'm sure your DD is just thriving, as you say.

Congratulations on your arrival. She's beautiful.

EKGEMS · 02/05/2019 20:21

She is just beautiful! Precious!

DameSylvieKrin · 02/05/2019 20:27

My 36 weeker went from the 24th percentile to the 96th in two months. Apparently such corrections are normal in low birthweight babies. He is ebf and you apparently can’t overfeed a breastfed baby.

Sun19 · 03/05/2019 07:17

My DS was 7lb2 at birth, he's now 6 weeks and 10lb8, so very similar 😊

Donnadon346 · 03/05/2019 08:39

I'd say that's pretty normal, my DS was born 8 weeks ago at 7lb 4oz and when I had him weighed last week he was 10lb 6oz, he did have tongue tie when born so lost a fair bit of weight in first few weeks. Your DD looks perfect to meSmile
