My sons temp is between 39 and 40 all evening , he has no other symptoms other than upset because he's feeling unwell 🤷‍♀️ I just cannot for the life of me get colour down him !!! And I've tried it all . With yogurt , inside a dummy , mixed with squash , down his throat with a syringe ( he just gags and vomits ) what els could I do ???? What if he doesn't have any 🤔

A consultant paediatrician told me recently that they're not concerned about high temperatures on their own so much any more, as it's a good way of the body getting rid of bugs- it's the other symptoms you want to look out for. So we now only give paracetamol etc if the DC are uncomfortable or in pain as well as having a temp.
Not sure if that's found it's way through to official nhs advice yet, but in your situation I wouldn't personally be worried at this stage.

Tootyfrooty35 · 01/05/2019 21:22

What polar said.

Helix1244 · 01/05/2019 21:23

Maybe make sure he hasnt got excess clothes on or blankets.
Could you try nurofen instead?

looneyloo88 · 01/05/2019 21:24

Ok thanks - I will just keep an eye for now . I've tried squirting in the cheek too but away he just spits out x

Stop for another 4 hours. You can’t tell how much he’s actually had at this point, don’t give him an overdose.

Use the syringe to squirt in between the cheek and the teeth. Don’t push the calpol down his throat, he’ll gag as you found out.

Cheekyfeckery · 01/05/2019 21:25

Go to the doctors tomorrow and get suppositories. Only way I could get paracetamol into DD.

StillIRise87 · 01/05/2019 21:26

Nurofen is orange flavoured, could you try that?

StillIRise87 · 01/05/2019 21:27

Also tesco do a cherry flavoured one as their own brand.

grumpypug · 01/05/2019 21:28

How old is he? When my DS was small, I cut out pictures from a comic to stick on the bottle and he had 'Action Man Power'.

qazxc · 01/05/2019 21:29

Make sure he doesn't have to many clothes cor covers on him. Mine used to calm down after a tepid bath.

mckenzie · 01/05/2019 21:34

Stop with the calpol.
Let the temperature do what it's trying to do and that is to get rid of something in your son that shouldn't be there.

Keep him cool (damp but not freezing cold flannel on the back of neck can help) and keep his room well aired and let him sleep.

RobinHobb · 01/05/2019 21:36

Suppositories.. miracle for Dd2 who just would not cooperate with calpol...

Annaseby · 01/05/2019 21:40

If there's no way to give him calpol or nurofen than take a pair of socks or a towel soaked in white vinegar and wrap his feet
It will take his fever down
From where I'm coming this trick is used quite often and it really works
How your son will feel better soon

JaniceJoplin · 01/05/2019 21:41

I had a similar problem and the solution for us was to use powder paracetamol from the chemist in very small dosages (as advised by pharmacist) and then put the powder in a small drink of squash.

Annaseby · 01/05/2019 21:42

I meant ''hope your son feels good soon"🤪

Can you get suppositories OTC? My dc1 always vomits with a fever

Goldmandra · 01/05/2019 21:48

Apparently your temp goes up because viruses (and bacteria?) find it harder to survive at higher temperatures so, by giving paracetamol, we're making it harder for their immune systems.

I'm happy to be corrected by someone who knows more about it.

looneyloo88 · 02/05/2019 01:29

Thanks everyone - I took him to out of hours and they have put us on the ward now , managed to give him a suppository, his temp is slowly coming down ( he's got tonsillitis) should be going home in a few hours !

gluteustothemaximus · 02/05/2019 01:33

Poor thing. Tonsillitis is horrible. Hope he feels better soon x

Lazypuppy · 02/05/2019 11:35

Midwife showed me that when you squeeze it in their mputh, squeeze their cheeks together as it makes them swallow
