13 week old baby thrashing with red face

Hi everyone. I've never posted a thread before but would really like help or some reassurance that everything is ok. I'm a First TM and my son is 13 weeks. This morning after he woke up, I changed him and he was on his mat whilst I was in the ensuite disposing of the nappy bag and washing my hands. I got back into the bedroom and was just getting into a comfortable spot to commence feeding when he started thrashing his arms and legs and his face went bright red. I think he was having trouble breathing. I quickly picked him up, patted him on the back and blew on his face. He seemed to get back to normal. He didn't even cry. I called 111 straight away.

They asked if he was constipated. He hadn't pooed for two days so I told them that. She asked if his body shook and I said no, it was his arms and legs that he was thrashing whilst his face was red. She took advice from a nurse who said if he was ok now, then he could have had constipation or struggled to breathe but it didnt mean there was something happening. His temperature is also fine
They reassured me and told me to call back if it happens again.

In my gut, I think he just had trouble breathing or maybe he swallowed too much saliva which had gone down the wrong way ... I'm not sure but I don't feel like there is something wrong as he is fine now but I guess I just need a handhold or some reassurance as I was alone and in tears afterwards. (DH is at work).

I don't know if this is just something that is just bad luck or if I should get him checked out. His behaviours are all normal and I should mention an hour after the call he did do a poo explosion with a bit of straining and after he had finished I put him in the bath, fed him and he fell asleep.

I don't know know if I'm being over cautious but I just would really like some advice or reassurance. Thank you

Did want to read and run, why don't you give your midwife or gp surgery a call and get him checked over to reassure you no harm in that. I'm sure he will be ok it he was having trouble breathing/air restricted he his face/lips would be turning blue pretty quickly. I know this as it happened to my son at 5 days old so if it was just a red face then I don't think he would have had breathing difficulties but get him checked out.

Thank you for responding. So I've rang the doctors and arranged an appointment for tomorrow. Even if he is okay I think for my own sanity I want to get him checked out.

He wasn't blue, he was just red which is good thankfully. I just saw his eyes really wide and his red face and I've been so upset all morning. I think I just wanted some reassurance that I wasn't being silly.

Sounds like a painful trapped wind to me my son used to do this and he was a baby who pooped every 2-3 days. Best to get him checked out though even if it's just for peace of mind!

I'm sure all is ok no harm in getting checked out. It's hard when they are small trying to figure out what's wrong with them.
