How does the baby come out?

My four year old is asking about how the baby comes out of mummy’s tummy?
Can any recommend an age appropriate description?
I’m stumped.

The baby comes out of the mummy’s vagina.

HastaLaVistaPrint · 29/04/2019 21:53

Women have three holes and boys have two. The middle one is what they have babies out of.

octonoughtcake3 · 29/04/2019 21:54

My nearly 3 year old knows women have 3 holes in their bottoms, one for wee, one for poo and one for babies to come out. I have told her the correct names but she doesn’t use them. She also knows that some babies get stuck and have to be cut out by a doctor.

The baby comes out of the mummy's vagina, but sometimes the mummy needs an operation to get the baby out safely. That's what we've gone with anyway.

TrixieFranklin · 29/04/2019 21:56

My 3 year olds asked if someone is going to dig the baby out of my tummy. I explained what really happens and they looked at me funny and then said that the baby is coming out of a water slide in my knickers BlushGrin

How did you leave the conversation so far?

There are some fantastic books about, maybe pop to the library and see if they recommend any? If you find it an uncomfortable topic, reading together can answer most questions easily.

Theninjawhinger · 29/04/2019 21:58

I told Ds it he came out my vagina but some women have an operation and the babies come out their tummies. I found answering that easier than replying when he asked how the baby got in!

HarryRug · 29/04/2019 21:59

I just said there is a little hole near mummy’s bottom where DS came out and as you were upside down it was safest for you to come out with a little operation. DD seemed happy with that explanation.

LL83 · 29/04/2019 21:59

As above "baby come out vagina" or if that is too much "go to hospital and midwife helps the baby out"

frippit · 29/04/2019 22:01

Mummy's have a special opening near where their wee comes out. Its usually closed but when the baby is ready to come out it pushes down, the opening stretches open and mummy pushes the baby out.
That's what we told my 4 year old granddaughter. She seamed satisfied with the explanation. As she gets older she could have a few more details, names of things etc.

GinZing · 29/04/2019 22:02

How about Mummy squeezes the baby out. Just that. You might not need anything else.

At least you’re not being asked how the baby got in there. Grin

Cornish83 · 29/04/2019 22:03

The same way it went in.

Tubbyinthehottub · 29/04/2019 22:04

A little hole underneath. No further questions asked!

IntoValhalla · 29/04/2019 22:06

My DD witnessed the birth of her brother at 17 months old. She’s just turned 4 and now we are expecting DC3. DS asked “how baby come out?”, and I was all set to explain the whole baby-vagina-exit thing, and Dd piped up with “out of mama’s bum like you did!” Grin
I corrected her “Not quite my bum” and did explain properly - I was just amazed that she remembered that because I’ve never actually talked to her about it!

thebigwoman · 29/04/2019 22:12

Am I the only person that thinks that a 4 year old really doesn't need much detail at all. Mummy goes to hospital.... mummy comes home with the baby.
Why does a 4 year old need to know about what hole the baby comes out from?

Don't you know? Confused

jackparlabane · 29/04/2019 22:19

Why does a 4yo need to know anything? They've noticed the huge bump, it's natural they're concerned that they can't see a zip or anything.
There's a special hole between women's legs called a vagina which gets very stretchy. Though sometimes babies get stuck and need pulling out with little sink plungers, or the mum needs an operation to have the baby taken out and get sewn up again which would be fine but she'd have a sore tummy for some time.

ScreamScreamIceCream · 29/04/2019 22:21

@thebigwoman if they sense you are hiding things they will ask you more questions. If you give them an age appropriate answer with details they get bored and talk about something else random.

Middledistancerunner · 29/04/2019 22:27

These are all very sensible and proper.
Yes, the baby comes out of the vagina is exactly how I will approach it.

My answer will definitely include ‘stretchy holes’ Grin.

I got myself into a mix because I asked a few friends who came out with some amount of rubbish - ‘the baby pops out’ or ‘like magic’ Hmm. Not my style, confusing and silly.

Thank you.

@thebigwomen my four year old needs to know because they’ve asked. I want to be honest, but age appropriate.

@ScreamScreamIceCream I don't even think my daughters asked the question from what I remember.
I don't see a problem with giving an age appropriate answer using language for a 4 year old, what I struggle with is people suggesting giving their 4 year olds an anatomy lesson. It's a bit much and completely unnecessary in my opinion.

thebigwoman · 29/04/2019 22:32

On one hand we tell our children about Father Christmas and the tooth fairy, but telling our 4 year old that the baby comes out like magic is 'confusing and silly'.

lokijet · 29/04/2019 22:45

the same way a hen lays an egg! to which I got lots of giggles about it coming out of mummy bottom but I explained ladies had a special extra pipe for babies and the doctors help it come out

TapasForTwo · 29/04/2019 22:48

I remember telling DD that it was like doing an enormous poo Grin

LJS79 · 29/04/2019 22:51

Honest and age appropriate exactly!!
I'm not sure why you wouldn't tell them the truth.
My daughter asked me exactly the same thing at that age and I told her the truth.

The following day she asked how the baby got in 🤦🏼‍♀️
