Getting in a tizz about 8 week jabs

Hi all
I'm hoping for some experiences which may calm my nerves as to what to expect at our 8 week jabs next week. All I have heard is horror stories about babies being inconsolable for hours and not themselves for days and days afterwards.

I am finally coming out of a pretty dark 6 week period after birth and am starting to get into a tizz that these jabs are going to push me right back down there. I am terrified at how I'm going to react to seeing LO in pain - I found the snipping of tongue tie traumatic and this sounds much worse.

Objectively I know that the benefits of having them done far outweigh the short term pain for him, but I'm really struggling not to think that he is going to be the 1 in 10,000 or 1 in 100,000 that has a dreadful reaction to them.

Any words of wisdom from those who have been through it already?

Hi, I think its understandable to be nervous and upset at the thought of baby having jabs, but honestly it my case it was a total non-event. With my daughter she cried for a few seconds and that was it. No problems after she was fine no temperature, nothing. ..

MynameisJune · 29/04/2019 20:19

You’ll be fine, I cried more than DD did. She was fine after about 5 mins and had no lasting effects at all.

Everyone says about bf’ing them if you do bf as that can help but the nurse wanted her in a strange position and I had to swap her sides so trying to bf her and then unlatch/switch before she was ready wouldn’t have helped the situation at all.

Take your DH or someone with you as a bit of support for you.

But it will honestly be fine.

Middledistancerunner · 29/04/2019 20:19

Neither of mine had any sort of reaction at all. An initial cry and then fine.
Perhaps we got lucky? Perhaps it’s because I expected them to be fine?

Bad news always travels, you’ll never hear the good vaccination stories because they are terribly uninteresting.
The disease is much worse than the jab. Your lo would never forgive you if you had the chance to save them from something bad and you didn’t do it.

Non event for us too. Tiny initial reaction then normality.

DoraleeRhodes · 29/04/2019 20:23

I found the tongue tie ship to be far far worse. Baby cried very briefly but was fine pretty soon after.

DoraleeRhodes · 29/04/2019 20:23

Snip not ship!

I was very much the same. Had a horrendous first 6 weeks and I was so scared of going back there. Terrible feeding issues and baby was very low weight so i was worried it would effect his feeding also.

The jabs themselves I found hard but honestly he screamed whilst they were being done but he recovered really quickly.

After, he was a little out of sorts but the main thing I noticed was that he just slept much more...for about 3 days. A little off his food but it was nothing like I had built it up to be and I wish now I had not got so worried about them. Good luck x x you will be fine xx

Baby jabs were a doddle.

Brief bit of crying which made my heart twinge and stomach wrench a bit but DS slept all day.

He was just permanently on my boob all day after so I took that as an excuse to go up to bed with him and watch TV 😄 they're not always horrendous.

12 month one was hardest by far but necessary.

Thank you so much everyone, I'm already feeling more calm after reading your lovely replies.

Mine was a bit off colour and slept all day and night, then was fine after that. The consequences of NOT having the jabs are much worse than any of the unlikely side effects.

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/04/2019 20:58

My GD cried, but only for a few minutes.

ShoeJunkie · 29/04/2019 21:00

Both mine were absolutely fine after.

ClareSleepy · 29/04/2019 21:26

Hi OP I understand your anxiety. My DD screamed for a few minutes after the jabs and she did have quite a bad reaction to them. She got a fever which lasted about 36 hours and was moaning and limp. She slept more than usual and I was scared and monitoring her. The experience was scary but short lived. One thing I would do differently next time is if I were to have to do it again I'd make sure she had paracetamol before the jabs as she was so worked up she struggled to take it afterwards and I think I could have prevented the fever getting as bad.

AssassinatedBeauty · 29/04/2019 21:39

For both my children, they reacted briefly to the actual jab, but were easily distracted. There wasn't any kind of reaction at all afterwards, just their normal selves.

mondler · 29/04/2019 23:06

My DS had them a few months ago and was fine. Cried a little but then was pretty much back to normal apart from sleeping 10pm- 10am! Think the whole experience scares us a lot more than them. Def give your baby the calpol x

Constance1234 · 29/04/2019 23:13

Ours were a non event too and I was really worried too OP. Cried a bit after the injection but was absolutely fine a few minutes later. I gave calpol as a precaution. I was more upset by the whole thing and my husband has taken them to all subsequent injections!

DelphiMum · 30/04/2019 07:44

Send the baby’s dad instead?

DC1: zero reaction after the initial yelps
DC2: didn’t sleep for 12hrs but was just awake not upset

Megasaur5keeper · 30/04/2019 08:22

Screamed a bit then was fine. If LO is getting rotavirus drops they can make some rancid, runny, green poops so be warned! (The GP Practice should give you a run down on what is a worry in this regard, basically poop that looks like redcurrant jelly).
Hope you are feeling better- the first 6 weeks are brutal...

Connieston · 30/04/2019 08:26

It's over in a moment and neither of mine were inconsolable, not even for a minute. I think a lot of normal baby stuff is attributed to the jabs.

Caterina99 · 30/04/2019 13:18

Mine were both fine. Cried a bit after the immediate jab, but nothing that couldn’t be shushed in a couple of min. I can’t recall any reactions to them and my youngest is only 18m so it wasn’t that long ago!

m4rdybum · 30/04/2019 13:39

My LG had a big cry for about 5 minutes afterwards but we got sat in the waiting room, gave her a dose of Calpol & a bottle and she was fast asleep after 3oz.

She was a little unsettled going to bed but she had slept a lot more than usual that day so that probably didn't help. Her leg (where they injected her twice) bruised slightly but no sign of fever.

I will say our nurses were amazing and had everything laid our ready so it was a speedy process.

In contrast, for her 12 week jab, she was a little trooper & only had one bellow.
