New born nappy rash

Has anyone got any advice?

My 3 week old has got the worst nappy rash, I've never had it with dd1. I am literally changing her nappy about 20 times a day and apply metonian cream but nothing seems to be clearing it? She seems to be pooing round the clock. She's bf so can't always tell when she's been to the toilet but am changing her nappy so regularly don't understand how it can be causing the rash?

I took her to the doctors last week and they said it might be a bit of thrush and prescribed some cream for her but that's not worked either.

Feel so sorry for her, her little bottom looks so sore. Has anyone got any advice?

Xxx

Maybe she doesn't agree with the nappies you are using? Or washing powder if you use cloth

katmarie · 28/04/2019 11:42

Go back to the doctor is my advice. If the metanium and the thrush cream isn't working, then it needs another look. Our Gp prescribed timodene for my ds's nappy rash and it was very very effective. But we had to go through the metanium and the thrush cream first.

nannyplummyarse · 28/04/2019 11:44

What nappies are you using? My dd has this and it turned out she had a chemical reaction to the nappies.

Thanks @LoisLittsLover @katmarie @nannyplummyarse I was using Mamia but switched to the pampers pure and there's not difference. Will try back at the doctors on Monday! Xxxx

Could it be the wipes?

Bringbackthestripes · 28/04/2019 11:49

I was wondering if it was wipes too. Couldn’t use wipes on my DC just used warm water and cotton wool then moved onto baby lotion and cotton wool to clean or else DC suffered terrible nappy rash. Slathered with sudocrem at every change so rash never returned.

katelily2017 · 28/04/2019 11:51

@Astrid0208 @Bringbackthestripes exactly what I thought so I've just been using water and cottonwool because of the rash! Have absolutely no idea what's causing it. Xxx

The only nappies i could use on my DD were sainsbury's little ones. No other nappy (i tried pampers, boots, morrisons, aldi, lidl, asda) seemed to help. But once i used the sainsburys i never had an issue with soreness again.

When mine had this it was a diary intolerance CMPI. I also found bepanthen and nappy off time helped, metanium hadn’t made any difference. It didn’t totally go until we cut dairy out altogether though, initially I went dairy free as was breastfeeding, well expressing and bottle feeding due to TT, and then she went onto a prescription formula.

PurpleGoose · 28/04/2019 12:00

My daughter reacted to cotton wool, so it could be that. We switched to cloth wipes (cheeky wipes and lollipop) and that helped, along with the Weleda calendula nappy cream. You could use face clothes (not microfibre) for a few days before investing in cloth wipes.

To be honest I'd switch to cloth wipes anyway - they are so much better at cleaning up poo and then later when weaning starts they are good for hands and faces too.

Another thought ishat a food allergy could be causing the rash (and the many poos). What is the poo itself like? Any mucus? Vinegar smell? Normal colour?

DoraNora · 28/04/2019 12:02

My DD had this too, ended up being a combination of CMPI and using water wipes ... Basically I had to make sure her little bottom was as dry as possible. Water wipes were far too wet! Aldi sensitive wipes have been much better for us.

Hope it gets better soon

MumUnderTheMoon · 28/04/2019 12:36

I used "eco by naty" nappies my dd never had nappy rash. Alternatively now that the weather is warmer could you lie her on one of the pads you put on a child's bed when they are toilet training or a puppy pad ( I used these instead as they are much cheaper) and just leave her nappy off. Getting air on her skin will probably be a big help.

I had this and had always sworn by metanium with my 1st, but didn't touch my now 12 week old. I tried weleda candula I think it's called and omg the difference. I use it all the time now. It's completely natural too so great for newborns.

witchy89 · 28/04/2019 13:54

Are you making sure her bum is totally dry before putting new nappy on? We had a bad case of nappy rash here a few weeks ago and just made sure she was totally dry, gave her loads of nappy off time and applied lots of coconut oil and it cleared up almost over night.I've heard amazing things about the Weleda calendula nappy cream too!

KTD27 · 28/04/2019 14:01

Yes to the timodene My daughter had this and I thought she might have CMPA but didn’t. The timodene cleared it up v quickly ask your doc Monday

Samind · 28/04/2019 14:04

I agree with a previous poster. My lo had nappy rash constant and it was CMPI. On prescribed milk with noticable difference

thinkfast · 28/04/2019 14:05

CMPI intolerance?

katelily2017 · 28/04/2019 14:12

@N0Time I've got a feeling it might be this, dd1 had dairy intolerance and had to cut out all dairy. How did you find out just by cutting out dairy??? Xxx

OP posts:
katelily2017 · 28/04/2019 14:14

@PurpleGoose I think you're right about food intolerance I'm guessing it's dairy, and I have noticed a slight vinegar smell. Did you get a diagnosis or did you just cut out of your diet? Xxx

We saw a specialist infant feeding health visitor who was great. I’m guessing most areas have them. I can’t remember how many weeks I had to cut it out for, I also couldn’t have Soya. Then we were told to reintroduce it to make sure that was the problem.
Her nappies were just thick green water, and we were having to change her 3x an hour. It also caused her to have silent reflux. So she struggled to feed, had hiccups multiple times a day and disturbed sleep.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 28/04/2019 15:08

It’s already been said I see, but my DD was exactly the same and it turned out to be a cows milk protein allergy. I was changing her nappy upwards of a dozen times a day and her nappies we always dirty, never iust wet. Metanium did nothing. Her bottom was so sore...not just a rash, it was almost blistered and sometimes bleeding and that vinegary smell. Use water and cotton wool and lots of no nappy time. Try cutting dairy out of your diet...I saw a huge improvement within a week. It took until my DD was 11 weeks old to work out what was going on.

katelily2017 · 28/04/2019 16:07

@N0Time @CoffeeChocolateWine brilliant thanks for the advice both! Will go and stock up on non dairy produce tomorrow. Sounds exactly the same bottom has been really blistered it just looks so sore and I am changing her nappy constantly I don't think I've witnessed a non pooey nappy yet. Just had to change it 3 times consecutively in the space of 5 minutes.

We're you very strict with absolutely no dairy (checking ingredients) or did you just cut out the main culprits (cows milk, cheese etc?) xxx

@katelily2017 we were diagnosed with CMPA and soya allergy, however this wasn't until she was 7/8 months old as she had several other health issues that 'clouded' the allergies.

In terms of cutting dairy, yes cut everything, not just the obvious. There's lots of things that have hidden dairy in them, common ones that you wouldn't expect: cucumber (the skin is often sprayed with casin, peeling makes it fine to eat), ham, wine. You don't necessarily need to replace everything with free from products though, as lots of things that you think would have dairy in them don't; for example jus roll pastry, certain brands of biscuit.

We saw a difference after about a week, but it can take up to 6 weeks for dairy to have completely cleared both your system and baby's. Also if there's some difference but not totally solved, soya might also be an issue, however don't cut it at the same time as dairy otherwise you won't know which is the problem.

If it is an allergy, go to the GP and ask for a referral to a dietician - if they refuse refer them to the NICE guidelines.

PurpleGoose · 28/04/2019 17:14

Sorry that post had paragraphs, but they seem to have disappeared.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 28/04/2019 17:37

Oh bless her, this is exactly like my DD. She used to do a poo as soon as I’d changed her previous dirty nappy. My older kids used to find it hilarious but I knew it wasn’t right. We were finally referred to a paed at 11 weeks when my DD started passing dried blood in her stools. The paed told me to exclude dairy completely from my diet for four weeks initially and if the symptoms eased they would take that as ‘confirmed’ CMPA and the symptoms did ease almost completely within a week or two. So yes, I excluded dairy completely and checked ingredients on everything. It takes a while to get used to it but it’s very natural now and there are so many good substitutes for dairy foods...except cheese but I miss that far less than I thought I would! DD is 11 months now and tbh a lot of the changes I’ve made to my diet will be permanent. Good luck and if you need any tips or recommendations just ask!
