Both full-time students - is it doable?

Hello all!

So I have applied and been accepted onto a full-time degree starting this September. I'll find out in a couple of weeks what my student finance package will be. Calculator shows me getting the maintenance loan plus the higher maintenance loan, childcare grant and parents learning allowance.

Husband has applied for a foundation degree on a part-time basis, however, he is now considering a full-time degree. He will be eligible for the same student finance as me, minus the childcare grant as that is per child, not adult.

Has anyone else done this and been okay financially? Had both of you studying full-time? We have a 6 year old at school. And we'll both be looking to find work around our studies. We currently get Universal Credit as we are in a full-service area.

I'd love to hear your experiences and tips for the next three years of our lives of what we can expect!! We will both be mature students (27 and 32).

Thanks in advance! Flowers

If you can afford it then I think you'll be ok.

You'll need to be very organised/good time management as you'll probably both be sitting exams etc at the same time but then you'll have all summer with your little one.

I'm currently doing a degree and husband works. I find from the September until around this time of year/end of exam period very hectic. January's exam period means the school Christmas holidays are a bit stressful too with trying to study along side kids being off school and Christmas in general. I don't get October and February half term off either so childcare can be an issue. I find I work lots on how evenings and weekends so my husband steps in with childcare - maybe something you'll have to work out with your husband.

What degrees are you both doing?

Good luck
