1 month old struggling to poo

Hello!
I'm a first time mum with a delicious 1 month old son. He's a gorgeous good boy, who generally is content as long as he's being held or fed! The only time he cries and cries and we can't console him seems to be when he wants to poo but can't; of course this is a guess because he can't tell me! But I'm fairly sure that's the problem.
Previously he'd been very windy and we struggled to get any wind up when we buried him. Infacol has really helped.
When he is struggling he cries and cries and strains and goes red, kicking his legs.
When he does eventually go for a poo it is usually quite spectacular! He seems much happier afterwards. I'd say we get about 4 huge poos a day. He is exclusively breast fed and generally feeds well. I have wondered if it could be Diarrhea but think it's just a lot of newborn poo. We have plenty of wet nappies.
Does anyone have any advice on helping him poo? We have tried moving his legs and massaging his tummy but no joy.
Thanks!

You could try getting some soluble fibre into him by eating porridge and apples yourself. Also drink lots and give him a few short extra feeds because as I expect you know the thirst quenching milk is first. The fattier richer milk later in a feed.

Other than that it's probably a phase. All newborns go through patches when they are not as happy for a few weeks then it wears off again.

If he'll take a bottle for you, cooled boiled water always worked for my LO.

It's probably this. You just have to comfort and wait it out, but the knowledge that he was straining in effort more than in pain comforted me.

Newborn poo is generally quite runny especially when breastfed.

That's really helpful, thanks everyone. @BertieBotts it sounds exactly like what is going on, and you're right, knowing it's not due to severe pain really helps.

@madroid you make very good points, I used to eat so healthily but since he's been here my diet is rubbish due to the newborn chaos, but I will try the porridge and apple for sure.

Thanks @Samind he hasn't ever had a bottle but I've just bought some for when I start to express xxx
