Kids birthday cakes

Where do others get their kids birthday cakes from? Do you make them? Get them from a supermarket? Order them specially from a cake maker?

I've ordered my son one every year from a local cake maker. He's 4. The lady made our wedding cake and his christening cake and my mum's 70th birthday cake. My son so far has had a jungle animals cake, a bing cake, an octonauts cake and this year PJ Masks. She is very talented!

I either make or buy from a local cake maker. However my daughter isn't wow on cake so this year I told her she's having a supermarket cake as it's a waste of money

Thanks for your replies, I really want to get one made for DD but all the cake makers I’ve contacted have given me such expensive quotes.
All the supermarket ones look either a bit rubbish or (Waitrose/m&s) you’re paying £30 anyway.
What to do what to do! Blush

Ive had them made or bought them. Most supermarkets do great cakes for under £15.

I make them for my girls

FraggleRocking · 27/04/2019 19:31

We don’t have a Morrison’s nearby to us so haven’t seen them IRL but I saw an advert on TV that they have loads of new kids cakes in their range that looked cute if this is an option for you?

I make them. Today's task has been a unicorn cake for dd. I'm half way through. Just wondering whether a glass of wine might enhance my cake decorating skills....

ravensrivers · 27/04/2019 19:40

I've always bought dd's from a local bakery but just off the shelf not specially made.
I'd only have one made if it was for a proper birthday party rather than our normal little gathering.

Always make.
Basic vanilla sponge recipe. Cover with buttercream and home made marshmallow fondant. Once you get the hang of it you can make pretty much anything!

Orangedaisy · 27/04/2019 19:43

I make one. Everyone else in dd’s class has a professional one, usually with tiers. They look like wedding cakes to me. I think it’s ridiculous and DD loves that she helped decorate -stick smarties on- hers.

SaigonSaigon · 27/04/2019 19:47

I always made them even though it took me hours and hours but I enjoyed it. Now my DS is about to turn 9 and for the second year in a row I've got a Morrisons cake as my 1 yr old has hampered my cake making!! I thought they had a decent selection for a decent price. But depends what you're after

NotSoThinLizzy · 27/04/2019 19:58

I make them if I have time. I just get the basic sponge pack mix for a pound out of Tesco and decorate it how they wanted.

Scrumptiousbears · 27/04/2019 20:15

I make cakes for family birthdays.

What I would say about professional
Cake makers and the cost. It's not just the ingredients. It's the skill and the time it takes to make a cake. It can take ages. So when you get expensive quotes you get what you pay for and you pay for skill and time.

bathorshower · 27/04/2019 20:18

Another one who bakes her own - they taste good (DD is incredibly picky, so it needs to be both a base recipe she can eat and butter icing), but definitely wouldn't win any prizes for appearances. I've found that picking a really simple, fool-proof idea and assuming that I'll find new ways to get it wrong work well!
