Reusable nappies

Hi all,

Couple of weeks away from becoming a FTM and am really keen on using reusable nappies. I've heard a lot of good things about them and am keen to do some good for the environment too.

I am however totally unsure as to which kind to go for. There seem to be so many different kinds.

Have you got any recommendations?

As part of the baby box in Scotland, we've received a voucher for a cloth nappy made by tots bots, so will try this out.

If you've used cloth nappies, did you use that brand?

Did you start using them from birth or a little later on?

Any recommendations would be really appreciated. :)

What region are you in? Your local council may offer a reusable nappy trial pack scheme - definitely worth looking into

Join The Nappy Lady group on facebook, babies suit different brands but you can go on there for advices and also get great second hand deals on there. I use it loads! Its Real Nappy Week next week so loads of offers too

We use Tots Bots and love them. Just something i didnt realise, birth to potty nappys are more like 3/4/5 month to potty.....massive on a newborn

Cloth nappy fan here and cloth wipes too. We used Tots Bots nappies and Cheeky Wipes. With the nappies we did use them from birth apart from at the hospital (it’s hopefully not for long and you’ve got enough going on without extra laundry to bring home. You’ll probably end up with a small pack of newborn disposables anyway as a sample from somewhere which will do those first couple of days fine).

With the nappies we had the birth to potty kit which fit DS fine all the way through. If you have a small baby they may not fit for a while. You can get a smaller size from Tots Bots but you’d have to decide if it seems worth it for the use they will get.

There are quite a few cloth trial packs if you aren’t sure and lots of good detailed info online. It’s real nappy week at the moment so there are discounts to be had if you feel ready to take the plunge after your research. The nappy lady website is worth a look. There’s also good information on the Tots Bots website.

Really love cloth wipes too, gentle and so effective. Great for bottoms and we had another set for weaning too which were fab.

I always got on best with motherland myself.

Thank you all!
I'm in Glasgow, Scotland.
Didn't realise the council would potentially have trial kits. What a great idea!!

Basically keen to get a little trial kit or similar before investing hundreds of pounds.

I did see they have trial kits on tots bots, which seems ideal.

What do you prefer when it comes to nappies? All in ones or 2 part nappies?

What are the pros and cons?

I use sized nappies with a separate wrap. I've used motherease sandys and little lambs microfibre nappies with motherease airflow wraps over the top. I've found the sized nappies easier as my daughter is extremely slim and I found the birth to potty ones too large and cumbersome on her. I bought all of my nappies pre owned from Facebook real nappy groups which made them more economical and also allowed me to try different nappies before spending a fortune.
I must admit that I didn't start using cloth nappies until my daughter was six months, mainly because she was very slim and I was uncertain of a good fit at that time.

Ij have one TotsBots, ten Bambino Mio and a dozen Alva Baby. DH prefers the velcro of the two fitness but I prefer the fit around the leg of the latter with the poppers. I prefer the charcoal separate inners I have with the Alva Baby too and add a Mio booster liner at night. We use Cheeky Wipes too which we both love. We started them all from about 8 weeks but I wish I'd started sooner!

I think tots bots are made in Glasgow, which put them at the top of my list! The shop merry go round in southside does a reusable nappy trial kit with lots of different brands to test, but as a pp has said they are mostly suitable from a few months old. They also have a meeting once a month where they go through the basics of reusable nappies.

I found for my baby that none fitted particularly well (chunky thighs), but I was going to try again when her legs grow a bit longer! I have a single totsbots to try again as I thought the style was good.

outpinked · 25/04/2019 12:13

I used a two part system with my DC as newborns simply because they have such skinny legs, all in ones don’t fit snugly enough around them until they get a little chunkier (at 2/3 months).

Two part system was basically pre-folds (take some getting used to but easy enough with a little practise) and a waterproof wrap over the top. I used Bambino Mio pre-folds and Tots Bots wraps. You can also buy actual sized nappies to go under the wraps if you find the pre-folds too much of a faff.

Switched to all-in-ones at around 2/3 months which are as simple as disposables. I love BumGenius and bambino Mio best of all, have found the newer Tots Bots aren’t as absorbent as older versions- may just be my baby though Grin. I have to stuff mine with extra boosters but I basically mostly use the prefolds! Just fold them and stuff them inside.

We have around 20 nappies and wash every other day.

Thanks for all the replies!

Yes, Totsbots seem to be local in Glasgow, which put them on the top of the list for me too.

I've heard about the Merrygoround and was thinking of popping in there sometime soon. A trial kit certainly sounds like a smart idea anyway.

I suppose it really just depends on the little one, doesn't it?

It seems most people go for the size 2 ones but only after a few weeks/months. I reckon with getting used to being a mum and all that comes with it might be a good idea to get used to one thing at a time. 🤣😊

Our daughter is 9 weeks old and so far we’ve got on best with the tot bots and bumgenius nappies.
The tot bots we initially used the smaller all in ones although the two parts are brilliant for when they are just a bit wet as you can just change over inserts meaning you don’t need as many wraps so save money.
Bumgenius are really absorbent and can be easier to dry where the inserts fold out. They also do a two part system which is great like the tot bots version.
I do agree that the all in ones are better as they get bigger though and i will admit we use disposables at night as our baby seems to sleep better in them as we found out using all the free packs we got through bounty and Emmas diary packs.
Personally we haven’t got on very well with the Applecheeks nappies or Little Lamb nappies (though their boosters are good for lining others) and we are reserving judgement on the miosolo as she’s too small for the all in ones we have of them.

PippilottaLongstocking · 27/04/2019 01:31

I’d go with muslins and wraps until they fit the birth-to-potty sizes, cheapest option and the muslins can be repurposed later on. My favourite combination is motherease sandys with an airflow wrap. There’s loads of Facebook groups for buying and selling, you can buy a few different types to test and sell them on when you’re done with them. It’s real nappy week this week (although most places seem to be doing it next week) so loads of offers about
