Do I need a chair in the nursery?

Currently trying to work out what furniture I can fit in our baby's nursery and tearing my hair out!

I am planning on buying a cot bed and a chest of drawers as a changing table. There is already a wardrobe in there.

My dilemma is..... is a chair really necessary for a nursery? There is space for a small one but it is still very tight.....plus all the chairs ive looked at are quite deep & will stick out a mile into the middle of the room! Not after a nursing chair - ideally a small armchair/occasional chair.

I am planning on bottle feeding, & would ideally like to feed the baby in the nursery at night rather than in our bed, so that i dont disturb my husband (and vice versa when its his turn to feed her!) Could also go downstairs and use the sofa i suppose.

Buying a cot rather than a cot bed would free up a little bit more space, but not a lot (and to be honest i would rather have a cot bed as it will last a little while).

So should i try to fit a chair in there? Is it an essential, or is it not necessarily worth it?

Thank you for your help Smile

We bought the comfyiest armchair from a charity shop and it was the best purchase ever. Small room as well but realistically it is only used for sleeping (Ha!) and most playing is done downstairs

Echoing PP’s, we definitely needed a chair. We haven’t got one in DS’s nursery yet but he’s still in our room at the moment (only 15 weeks). We’ll definitely get one before we move him into his own room. We had a nursing chair for DC’s 1 and 2 but gave it away after DD2 thinking we wouldn’t have any more!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply everyone, this has been so helpful. Definitely given me a few more options to consider Smile

@MynameisJune i was actually just googling these!! Can i ask what one you went for, if you know/remember? Its actually quite hard trying to find one as standard size cot beds keep coming up in the search results Grin

@rainbowcakes I’m almost certain it’s the Tutti Bambini Katie. They class it as a space saver cot bed but the mattress is standard cot size. We couldn’t fit a full cot bed in next to our bed.

It depends when you’re planning to move your baby into it’s own room. We moved DD in at 7 months by which time she’d stopped having night feeds. I did use a chair to feed her in directly before bed but it wasn’t necessarily essential and when I’d soothe her in the night I’d be sat next to the cot on the floor to stroke her back

MyKingdomForBrie · 22/04/2019 22:10

I'd say essential, I have one in both bedrooms and use both daily, eldest for stories and baby to feed!

SMaCM · 22/04/2019 23:06

I had an armchair. Somewhere to rest your arms while baby snoozes on them. I kept it there for bedtime stories as she grew up.

Bombalarino · 23/04/2019 09:29

Yes I have an oversized armchair which doesn't really fit! Not good for the general look but very comfortable so I wouldn't want to be without Smile

I haven't had time to read the whole thread, but won't the baby be sleeping in your room for at least the first 6 months? Apologies if this has already been said, but baby shouldn't sleep alone at night until at least 6 months due to SIDS risks.

I always fed my babies sitting up in bed in our room when they were still in with us. I wouldn't bother with any kind of chair in the nursery for now. You never know, by 6 months your baby might be sleeping through and not need a night feed at all!

Nameusernameuser · 23/04/2019 17:00

Get one. When my son went in his own room I sat on a shitty IKEA fold up chair that was a tenner and was my desk chair. the back ache was another level.

SoyDora · 23/04/2019 17:19

Even after mine stopped having night feeds (much later than 6 months Blush) I still used the chair for cuddles/bedtime stories etc.

Rarfy · 23/04/2019 17:21

I've had one in our room since dd was born. She is 15wks now. I use it for her story and middle of the night feeds. Last feed I tend to do in bed. She is formula fed so probably makes a difference.

Rarfy · 23/04/2019 17:23

Just saw you are planning on bottle feeding. We have our perfect prep and all bottles upstairs and have recently started dispensing formula in the morning into storage pots so it's just a case of adding to bottle then putting in perfect prep. So much easier and faster. I have it all on a little tray on bedside table.

rainbowcakes · 23/04/2019 21:17

I was planning on having her in our room with us for at least 6 months as per the guidelines Smile

Just been doing some measuring (again) and I think im only going to be able to fit a tub chair in there. Hopefully this will be alright and using pillows/cushions will help if my back starts to feel sore! Confused

@Rarfy What a great idea! I bought a perfect prep machine & some little storage pots a couple of weeks ago, so i may try this!

I didn’t have one for my DS and got one for my DD who is 2 years younger. She’s 18m now and I still use it every day for reading her bedtime story.

I fed my eldest in our bed (breastfed) and it destroyed my back. Plus I was more anxious about falling asleep during night feeds. DD slept in our room but I’d take her to the nursery for feeds
