My 20 month old hates our new home

I’ve never posted on here before but I feel I need to talk about this. I’m a single mom and my little girl is 20 months old, since she was around 8 months old, we have been living in my parents home. The house is always full of people as my mom and dad have got 4 children including me, so there’s always people around. She loves it here and is happy, however the house is much too overcrowded for us all to continue to live here. And of course, we need our own space anyway.

We’ve now got our own place which is a lovely house. But I just feel like she’s not happy here ☹️L For instance if I say to her “let’s go back to mommy and baby’s house now then” she starts to cry and says “no mommy” . We’ve only been living here for a couple of days and I understand that it will take her some time to get used to the quietness with it being just me and her, but I’m so worried that she’s just going to end up hating our home and wanting to go and live back with nan and grandad.

I’m starting a new job next week too which is weekends, and she’s going to be staying with my mom and dad whilst I’m at work, and I just know that when I go to collect her she’s going to cry because she won’t want to come home.

Congrats for your new job! It will also be so exciting to decorate your own home, I'm sure you will both learn to love it and invite your family for visits, so you can have a lovely crowd in your new home.

Part of what makes a house your home is doing things in it. In this case, especially some things you haven’t done elsewhere.

It will take time for her to adjust, she’s away from a place and people she’s used to. Make it a fun happy place for her, she’ll be very happy once she’s older to have some space!

It will feel strange to her at first but she will grow to love it, as you do. Try to get as much of her stuff unpacked so that she has familiar things around her. Don't make a fuss but let her see that you are enjoying getting things for your new home. Congratulations on your new job. Don't anticipate trouble but if your DD is upset just stay calm and carry on (don't cave in and leave her at your mum's). Having your own home is best for both of you and when you are settled you can have lots of visits from your family

You have new house anxiety. I think lots of people when moving have concerns whether they have made the right decision. You are probably all over a bit tired from the stress of moving, new surroundings etc, and everything will settle down in due course.

It will take a little while for her to see the new house as home, but she will settle. Can you plan something nice. Even something as simple as choosing some nice to unicorn/mermaid/pink bedding, or a picture to go up all the wall, or a new teddy will help her settle. Or do some cooking together, or have Friday night as cinema (film and popcorn) night. Make it exciting for her
