Unsettled baby after Baby Massage class

Has anyone else had an experience where their baby has been unsettled after a Baby Massage class? I had only heard positive things about these classes so I took my 11 week old boy yesterday. He was as good as gold during the class and seemed content. He was a bit whingy about an hour after class but we were told babies may be thirsty afterwards ( like adults can be after a Massage I guess) so I gave him some water. I assumed I was a top masseuse as not only did he poop before we left for class (he is like clockwork and poops once every 2 days), but he went again before, during AND after his bath last night. I was quite pleased with myself and thought, great this must be working! However he’s been really unsettled and crying for spells all night. I’ve been up twice to feed him and I have only ever had to do 1 night feed since he was born. I’m not even convinced he was hungry, he was moving his legs up and down like it was wind. (Please go easy on me as I know getting up twice in the night is not a big deal, but that mixed with the fact he has been unsettled most of the night is not the norm for my boy! ) Just wondering if I’m missing a trick? It’s putting me off going back next week.

One bad night could just be that, one bad night. Take him back next week, talk to the instructor and see if it happens again.

Don't give water. That's likely to be the problem. Did you boil it first?

Assuming there were other mums and babies there - perhaps he picked up some kind of bug while there

My son slept so badly every week after baby massage - it took a while for me to realise the pattern (probably because I was so sleep deprived anyway, he wasn't exactly a good sleeper the rest of the time!). The lady who ran the group said it can be over stimulating for them.

Could also be the water though - why did you give water instead of formula/bm?

I did give him his feed after class as usual but because he was still unsettled I gave him some water (yes, previously boiled). Now I am confused - my HV had previously advised it’s ok to give a little water if needed? (she was referring to it helping aid them to poop but still, it was advised a little water is ok). Hmmm, I am now one confused mama!

They don't need water, they get everything from milk. They shouldn't be drinking water until 6 months. I've had massages before that pushed air into my tummy. I'd try to wind him.

Of course you can give your baby a little boiled water, the concern is if they confuse that for their milk feed. Especially with summer approaching so please don't fret. It could just be coincidence, my son like yours good as gold then he'll have the odd night which makes me worry he's not 100% but the next day he's back to normal.

Grey86 · 19/04/2019 14:53

Thank you - normality has resumed and he’s a happy little boy again. Possibly was the water.....it’s all a learning curve for us new mums! I guess that’s the point of these forums though - to ask and get advice, not to be made to feel stupid or like you’ve done something wrong!

Ds hated baby massage,we gave up in the end. It doesn't suit every one,see how it goes next week.

rayrayrayray · 20/04/2019 00:15

Sorry but that's not the concern. The concern is their sodium and electrolyte levels. You can google it and there's loads of information about it.

It was probably the water. When they said dehydrated they meant to give them a normal milk feed. Don’t worry and move on :)

If it was the water don't beat yourself up about it. The majority of late teenagers walking around today were given cool boiled water as standard as that's what was advised back then and they're all perfectly fine.
