Hi all, baby is 13 weeks. Born 8lb15oz was weighed last week at 16lb 10!
He is feeding 8oz every 3 hours. Drains the bottle but I cannot fit anymore in the bottles! (9oz bottles)
He is on hipp organic first milk. Sleeps through
He drinks so much. 8oz at only 13 weeks. Milk is costing a fortune! What do I do when he wants more? Do bigger bottles exist? Hungry baby? Food?

Both my two have been the same. You just have to keep feeding them what they want when they want it and count down the days till you can wean them when they eventually start cutting down on milk.

Don't bother with anything other than more milk.

I have always weighed mine regularly. Wanted to feel reassured by them following their percentile lines nicely even when it seemed they we're drinking way too much milk. So long as they followed their lines, they we're obviously just having what they needed. Had they veered wildly above I might have sought out some advice but they never did.

Underactor · 18/04/2019 22:40

But yes, it costs a fortune. No getting around that I'm afraid. I feel your pain though!

xxxParisexxx · 18/04/2019 22:45

He has been following the 91st centile since birth but last week went between the 91st and 98th so not veering much off.
My first was hungry but not like this! A pot of milk only lasts around 5 days!
I weaned early with my first but did want to wait till 6 months this time with him as better educated but it also doesn't help when people see how much and how often he drinks and they give their opinion that he needs food!
I can I get bigger bottles or would u just stick to 8oz. What about when he starts crying for more ?
Thanks for your reply x

Could he have reflux? Sometimes babies overfeed to soothe it?
Mam and tommee tippee do 11oz bottles

May be worth trying paced feeding too ?

Tinyteatime · 18/04/2019 23:00

Weaning onto solids at 17 weeks is fine. Recent research shows it’s probably beneficial in the developed world as it greatly reduces the risk of allergies and there’s no ‘risks’ to doing so as long as you’re feeding babies appropriate foods (ie. purees until they can sit independentlyso there’s no choking risk). If you can stick the cost until then I would intro solids at 17 weeks.

xxxParisexxx · 18/04/2019 23:17

No reflux, my first had silent reflux and it was awful but no signs from him. Hes happy after his milk and if he ever spits up it's a tiny amount and hes not in pain.
Paced feeding makes him angry!! I let him drink until he wants to stop/gets squirm and then burp. He then drains the rest.

Milk is costing a fortune

Wait till they start eating food!

user1496701154 · 19/04/2019 00:01

Please don't wean early this can damage a child. My son was on 10 oz bottles at one point we Alps got told by HV to give him cool boiled water. Alqay burp halfway through bottle as well

My baby (98th centile) was like this. He was having 5-7oz 6-8 times a day at 4 weeks old. He was in hospital and the paediatricians said he was having about double what he should be having.

He's now 5 months and those feeds haven't actually increased. He averages 7oz 6 times a day and has been right on the 98th centile line from day one. His length has gone from 50th to 91st though

xxxParisexxx · 19/04/2019 06:56

Hes off the chart for the length lol! X

Just make more milk when he has finished. In the same way you would make another cup of tea if you had one but then wanted another.

xxxParisexxx · 19/04/2019 06:59

Englishdictionary I'm sure when he weans he wont be costing 8.50 every 4 days like atm for the milk! At least not at first lol teenage years that will be a day lol!!

OP posts:
xxxParisexxx · 19/04/2019 07:25

That's fine when we are indoors storm but with a 3year old as well, we are out alot. I'd be carrying about 6bottles!

99calmbeforethestorm · 19/04/2019 07:29

If he has just had milk in that bottles and it’s only in for 20 mins then you can reuse that bottle as it’s the same feed.

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 07:32

I was posting that as a bit of a haha thing, but actually £8.50 for 4 days when your child is a toddler isn't high. Not at all.

99calmbeforethestorm · 19/04/2019 07:33

^ I thought that too englishdictionary

xxxParisexxx · 19/04/2019 08:14

I wasnt having a go , good to know storm x

Tinyteatime is correct - current research suggests weaning at 4 months is better than waiting until 6 months.
Priming baby’s gut with foods helps to expose their immune system, to allow it to identify them as harmless substances. If you wait, the first exposure may be via skin, not gut, and the immune reaction can produce allergies.
NHS guidelines have not caught up yet - this is research from clinical immunologists in London, after they realised that their colleagues at international conferences had never seen a child with peanut allergy, as they came from countries where early weaning was the norm.
It fits with our clinical experience in the U.K.- my generation weaned much earlier, (often onto peanut butter!) - and never saw peanut allergies then either!
It sounds like your baby is bloody hungry and needs solids. At that weight, they’ll need ridiculous quantities of milk and be peeing for Britain- I’d recommend weaning.

xxxParisexxx · 19/04/2019 17:52

Babdoc so I can wean at 4 months? He is a very hungry boy but didnt really want to use hungry baby milk as I heard its not good for them but it's getting a bit ridiculous!

I weighed him with scales at home today and he is now 18lb at 13 weeks x

I weaned both of mine at 4 months as they were big hungry babies as advised by HV. Both are great, non fussy eaters!

xxxParisexxx · 19/04/2019 18:22

I will see health visitor next week, maybe I should ask then? X
