8 month DD2 has been prescribed it earlier as some of her pox are starting to look infected. First dose was a disaster she was sick straight after giving it to her, after having a google I found out that this stuff apparently tastes absolutely vile!! So obviously that’s why she was sick.
Anyone know how I can get this in her? She needs it 4 times a day & not to be taken with food?? Help!!!

On another note why would they make something taste so vile that needs to be given to a baby/child.

You need to call the GPS or pharmacist in case she's allergic to it and ask for an alternative if there is one. I think amoxicillin is banana flavoured. What does flucoix taste like.

SoHotADragonRetired · 12/04/2019 16:32

I mean, do you think they're deliberately putting disgusting tasting stuff into it? Medicine just doesn't taste nice when it's in suspension, and kids can't take pills which can be coated. They do their best to cover it up but there's only so much sugar you can dump in there. (I can't stand the scent of the banana flavouring they usually put in there, but my kids don't seem to mind.)

There's no guaranteed way you can stop her vomiting, but I would tip her back in your lap and give the dose slowly, bit by bit. If you're using a syringe squirt it into the side of the cheek and wait until she swallows each bit before adding more. Try to keep her as calm as possible so she doesn't swallow as much air.

If it's that bad then call the dr and get an alternative or check with the pharmacist if giving it in a yogurt or such like would be ok.

Ime they all taste terrible but my youngest seems to love the yellow amoxicillin which my other 2 detested.

Just be careful in case she’s allergic - Ds penicillin allergy started off with exorcist style puking as soon as it was inside him. It progressed really quickly, but that was the first symptom.

SaturdaySauv · 12/04/2019 16:36

Fluclox is particularly good for skin infections so unless it’s established that your DD is allergic to it they may suggest persevering. It does taste foul but as pp said it’s the drug itself that is incredibly bitter so not much can be done about it.

Tinks15 · 12/04/2019 16:49

I appreciate that they all taste pretty vile, but it’s quite difficult to get babies to swallow any medicine even Calpol in my experience. I remember DD1 didn’t take to it until she was a lot older. Now she loves the stuff!
Yes that’s the way I usually do it, I squirted a tiny bit into the side of her cheek but she literally just spat it put & starting coughing & spluttering. Then the next bit was when she actually swallowed the tiniest amount & then was sick.

We had this problem with dd who was prescribed it for periorbital cellulitis. Went back to gp and they prescribed co amoxiclav instead. It was a different gp second time and they said it's a common issue. Dd took co amoxiclav happily. Maybe ring them or get another appointment.

Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 20:14

It tastes appalling but it’s a really effective antibiotic. Ds had it prescribed for cellulitis. It was either that or IV. The only way we could disguise it was in very sugary fromage frais or strong Ribena

Comefromaway · 12/04/2019 20:15

I had to test the dilution and it’s a really bitter taste.

Owwlie · 12/04/2019 21:40

DD recently had to take this, I added icing sugar to it to sweeten it. Didn't completely get rid of the bitterness but did help.

My dd1 has penicillin as a baby, about 6m old for an ear infection and she had an allergic reaction to it (hives). She gets prescribed something else now (sorry I don’t know the name) and it tastes disgusting. She is 7, so when she needs it I let her have a sip of pop afterwards or strong squash like Ribena or Vimto.
Dd2 has never been on antibiotics and she’s coming up to 2. She is however an absolute nightmare for taking Calpol when she has general fevers and just drools it back out, or simply legs it screaming 🙄
We get a Fruit Shoot bottle (keep empty one in the cupboard) and put in a small amount of strong, but diluted black currant juice, Vimto or Ribena. Then pop her dose of medicine in. Give it a little shake.
She’s then so happy to see a Fruit Shoot (she isn’t allowed them often) she will down the lot 👍 😂

DD refused all medicine. Anal suppositores instead of calpol worked.

She became so ill aged three I had to take her to A&E. The dr explained that if she didn't sip a cup of water every hour and take the AB's (augmentin), she'd need to be admitted on an iv drip. He showed her the cannula and explained all about it.

Have never seen an obstinate child neck a cup of water faster and swallow a dose of abs without complaining. That and the promise of Barbie and her Kitchen kept us out of hospital.

DrunkenUnicorn · 12/04/2019 23:07

I had exactly the same issue when ds3 was 12m, infected pox spots and I couldn’t get that particular ABX in him for love nor money. Tried all the usual tricks, mixing it with yogurt, strong squash, two people trying to administer etc. He just got hysterical and we were all covered in it.

I rang the gp back and explained to the receptionist, who went and spoke to gp and prescribed a different type. Said it was very very common and not to worry.

I would give them a call in the morning. Good luck.

Tinks15 · 13/04/2019 03:12

Thanks for your replies everyone, I will be calling GP in the morning to ask them if they have an alternative.

Put it in peanut butter.

mynameisMrG · 13/04/2019 03:19

My DS2 is taking this at the moment. I feel for you because it really does taste vile. I have to basically pin him down to get him to take it. A friend suggested putting a small amount of calpol in the end of the syringe to mask the start of the taste. It’s not easy is it, especially when you can’t explain that they have to have it ☹️
