Help! 6 month constantly moves in sleep

Hello,

My 6 month old has constantly started moving in his sleep for the past few weeks.

It coincides with him learning to roll so now he rolls onto his front in his sleep or just moves around. It’s like he’s trying to find a comfy position but can’t.

I don’t pick him up straight away and try shushing him...sometimes that works but most times he just ends up crying. As soon as I pick him up, he falls asleep straight away in my arms and I can put him down and he’s asleep for another 2-3 hours again and then it starts all again.

I’m trying not to pick him up so he learns to self settle but he literally starts cryinh after 2-3 minutes and I’m so tired, I give in just so he falls asleep quicker and I can get back to bed.

If I play white noise, he usually falls asleep but don’t want to whip out my phone or damage his ears.

I am not going to do control crying and it’d break my heart to hear him cry and it won’t work with him, he’ll cry until he’s blue in the face.

He only wants one bottle at night so it’s not hunger.

He doesn’t move if he’s in our bed but I hardly put him there. Too scared we might roll on him etc.

Any suggestions?

He sleeps in the travel cot at the moment as he’s outgrown his snuzpod and we are going to put his cot in our room once we get round to building it. Is the travel cot uncomfortable? We bought a proper mattress for it.

I thought maybe he’s cold? It’s 19 degrees in the room, he’s got a short sleeve bodysuit, a sleep suit and 1.0 tog. Don’t want him to overheat though if i put him in. 2.5 tog.

My boy does this. It got worse just before he learnt to crawl. He's nearly 15 months and he still roams round the cot or our bed if we've stuck him in there.

That's perfectly normal all three of mine did it. I think I heard it's how they strengthen their muscles if that makes sense.

If he likes white noise get Ewan the dream sheep! He was great for our son!

Mt travel cot mattress is noisier than the cot mattress

DS did this at about this age. He would roll over one way but couldn’t roll back, so would cry. We would go in and turn him over and about half an hour later it would happen again. It was a horrible phase but luckily short lived as he soon learnt to roll the other way.

I would get his cot made up as soon as possible and see if that is more comfortable than his travel cot

Both of mine have done this, I think it’s normal. DS only really started sleeping in one position after a good 6 months in his bed, and DD is 18m and goes from one end of the cot to the other all night in every position possible.

I feel it calmed down after a week or 2 once they figured out how to roll both ways and the novelty wore off

Completely normal, part of them learning how to move themselves around - generally it's better to try to let themselves settle back down - do you have a video monitor so you can keep an eye without going in & disturbing them?

Definitely try the 2.5 tog! My baby has been in long sleeve vest, baby grow and 2.5 tog the whole winter at 19' in her room. If it gets the 18', I put a blanket over her too.

White noise is also good, won't damage his ears. I have My Hummy, expensive but has helped mine to settle alone at times.
