Youtube family feeding an 8 week old baby completely inappropriate food?

I'm interested in people's opinions on this.

I've been following a family on Youtube and last night they admitted to weaning their baby on jam, Nutella and baked bean juice at 8 weeks old. Before that they were giving her rusks mashed with milk.

People have tried telling her that this is not appropriate but she's insisting that as this is her 10th child, she knows best and the father is backing her up on this.

I've followed and enjoyed watching this family for a while now but am really concerned that this will do long term damage to the baby. Mine were weaned at around the standard 6 month age and I've never heard of anyone weaning this early or on this type of food.

Is there any instance where weaning a baby this early can be good for the child?

I really don’t understand why people watch things like this on YouTube. I would assume they were making it up to get more viewers/money.

You want to cure YouTube of idiots? Good luck with that.

If she's had 10 kids doesn't seem to have harmed the other 9. Sounds shit, yes, but nothing you can do.

They don’t say they weaned their baby on Nutella, jam and beans? They said she tried a little bit on a dummy. Which is still pretty crap in my opinion but not as bad as you’re making out

Seeline · 08/04/2019 17:47

My youngest is only 14yo and they were still advising weaning at 16 weeks routinely.
When I was born 50 years ago, my mum says they started weaning at about 6 weeks. There seem to be fair few people of my age around 🙂
Agree it's probably not ideal, but advice does change.

They don’t say they weaned their baby on Nutella, jam and beans?

Thats even worse because the sugar stays on the gums/teeth thats why yoou dont dip dummys in cordial or fruit juice

TurnOffTheTv · 08/04/2019 17:58

@Seeline same here! My 20yo was weaned at 10-12 weeks because those were the guidelines at the time.

Gingerkittykat · 08/04/2019 18:08

My sister's first food at around 8 weeks old was a slice of bread dipped in bolognese sauce.

My 19 year old was weaned at 4 months as per guidelines, and they used to tell you that by 6 months they should be able to cope with lumps.

I know the guidelines change as science learns new things but not weaning according to the current guidelines is highly unlikely to damage a baby.

Kokeshi123 · 10/04/2019 00:48

Won't kill the baby, but yes, a bit shit/substandard.

SnowdropFox · 10/04/2019 07:59

It is also possible that they are thriving on the attention they are getting from what they are posting (true or not). They are posting videos of for that exact reason, and probably loving the extra views they are getting from you posting on here.

Don't share articles and videos exhibiting bad or outdated advice and less people will get confused or take it as gospel and try it. Simples.

I was weaned at 6 weeks with egg yolk. I survived.

Sammy867 · 10/04/2019 08:15

We were advised by a paediatrician to wean my 3 year old before 5 months and introduce peanuts daily to reduce the risk of allergies developing before the immune system matured at 6 months. This was because of the leap study that had just came out. They constantly change guidelines

Started watching it - why are you watching a fat bloke drink Pepsi and wander around his sitting room? It's not interesting, his house is boring - what does it add to your lives to watch this stuff? So weird.

My SIL weaned my neice on this's little tins of baked beans with sausages in them at around 4 months. I will admit to being a bit Shock at the time....(as I lovingly researched homemade vegetable concoctions that I would spend time making and then dd refusing to eat).

Both girls are teenagers now. My niece is a tall lean, super fit amateur gymnast.

🤷🏻‍♀️

I know it's not ideal but dcs survive. A friends dd had a heart condition and was fed via a tube directly into her stomach until she was 4. From 4-6 yrs she would only eat toast and quavers. Literally. Dietician said not to worry. She is now 16. Very intelligent and healthy.
