Returning to work while breastfeeding

Hi Ladies, just looking for a bit of advice in regards to return to work. Prior to mat leave I was on shift work that excluded me from the WTD due to the shift pattern, while I have been on mat leave they have changed the pattern so all shifts are now 12hours days or nights. I am breastfeeding and have just had my return to work meeting, the paediatrician and HV both advised that while breastfeeding I shouldn’t be working more than 8hr shifts (risk of engorgement/ mastitis), and shouldn’t work nights (messes up milk supply). Employer has advised in meeting today that they will facilitate this for just under 3 months after my return to work, but then I have to go into the 12hr days & nights roster. I’ll be going back when baby is 12 months. By them stating I HAVE to go into the 12hr roster etc at that point it was implied that I would be stopping feeding then, whereas I want to breastfeed for as long as baby wants my milk.
Sorry if this has turned into a rant. I wasn’t sure where else to ask.

They have also advised that my fixed start time will be at 7am to fit with the roster pattern, my husband works away at times, is there anything I can do as the childminder doesn’t take them before 7am at all.

Thank you for any advise in advance

Have you officially submitted a flexible work request to change your hours etc

AFAIK employers can still refuse this if it causes an impact to the business though and I think you would need to show that it wouldn’t

Also, WRT the start times, your childcare issues isn’t really their problem, is it?

Yes I have put in a flexible working request. They have said they will only facilitate for just shy of 3 months. They changed the shift length and start finish times while I’ve been on mat leave.

Worth call to Maternity Action. This feels like it may fall under discrimination rules.

I'd do as above, and be looking for a more suitable role long term during those 3 months.
How big is the company? As much as it shouldn't, fighting something and winning can create as many problems as it solves - an unpleasant atmosphere is hell to work in!
