When to stop nighttime milk

My 2 year and 4 month old DS still has milk at night before bed. At what age should I be stopping this?

We stopped at 12 months with all 3 of mine when we stopped formula and bottles.

I don’t see an issue if it’s before teeth brushing and they’re dry over night (in the case of the 4YO, not necessarily the 2YO). My 8YO neice still like warm milk before bed, I don’t think it’s that different to an adult having a cup of tea. My DD was done by 18 months but she’s not a milk fan.

Oh and if the milk is from an age appropriate cup, not from a bottle!

My 12 year old still likes a glass of milk before bed, so long as they brush there teeth after there isn't an age limit!

My son has a sippy cup of milk for bed and he's 20 months.

BarmyLlama · 31/03/2019 22:50

DD is 6 and will still have milk (in cup, not bottle) before bed. No problem!

hayf · 31/03/2019 22:57

We stopped to make the move from night nappies to none, so at about 3 +/-

Reddragonqueen · 01/04/2019 07:57

My 4yo has supper, a small glass of milk and bowl of wheatabix after pj's are on. Then it's teeth brushed, last wee, storytime and bedtime

user1493413286 · 01/04/2019 20:50

My health visitor said not to worry about stopping bedtime milk until DD is about 4 as long as we’re brushing her teeth before bed

Heffalelephant · 01/04/2019 20:55

As pps have said, it's the bottles and the teeth that are the issue here, so if it's a cup of milk before their teeth are brushed then it's not a big deal, but if it's in a bottle or after teeth brushing then it is.

Also have a look at dairy portions as it might mean you need to cut down at other times of day - I'll try and find the info I have from my HV and post it.

When he stops drinking it. We stopped at 16 months because he wasn't that interested once it was in a cup instead of a bottle

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 01/04/2019 21:02

My 5 year old often has a cup of warm milk before bed - as do I!

enoughisenough2 · 01/04/2019 21:28

Just stopped my dd5’s bed time milk last week it’s also been the end of bed nappies she has it at 5pm instead

user1496701154 · 01/04/2019 21:57

@heffalelephant that's won't fill my one year old I think that's a bit out dated. He's be like where's my food. 😂 . Your suppose to offer a 1/4 of your portion for a child.

worldwandering · 01/04/2019 22:02

My 11 year old still likes a glass of milk before heading up to bed, especially after late activities. He’ll nab a slice of toast with it too if he’s peckish. Boys this age are growing madly and still need milk too so don’t stop the milk drinking habit too soon.

Heffalelephant · 01/04/2019 22:28

@user1496701154 😂 mine is the same to be honest, but I use it as a gauge for roughly what percentage should be carbs, dairy, etc, and scale it up slightly as mine eats more than me some days! I did have to reduce the dairy a bit and increase some other categories so I still find it helpful to look at. The milk portions are particularly tiny and we've probably filled our entire dairy quota by the end of breakfast (cereal and small cup of milk) but often have yoghurt or cheese later in the day too, so I cut out all other milk. For an "average" toddler, maybe these portions are about right? Mine is 2 but as tall as many 4 year olds!

user1496701154 · 01/04/2019 22:54

@heffalelephant I know what you mean. I wasn't digging at all and understand where your coming from. Am sure kids just eat more than we expected. We probably go over that everyday. We offer milk and do alot of porridge and yougurts here. My son's very active so maybe your right for an average toddler my lo not exactly tall but am tiny 😂 but he never stops from getting up till bed time

MrsKoala · 02/04/2019 09:35

My 4 and a half year old still has a bottle of warm milk in bed every night. And a dummy. I don't see the problem.

Nowthatsamiriacle · 03/04/2019 08:09

DS had a bottle before bed until he was 3.5. I did't see an issue. They all give it up at some piont.
