Postcaesarean painkiller recommendations please

I had a baby by caesarean in Friday and came out yesterday. I was given cohydramol to take home even though I said it was not effective. I'm going to call my GP tomorrow morning to ask for stronger painkillers. Can anyone recommend a strong one they were given as I am in pain and have s toddler to care for so ibuprofen and paracetamol won't cut it for me.

I had diclofenac (similar to ibuprofen but prescription only as it’s stronger) and paracetamol and was told to take them alternately on a schedule, not to wait until I felt in pain.

Handofglory · 31/03/2019 20:29

I had diclofenac. Was pretty good if I kept on top of it. You will feel a lot better this time next week x

Voltarol/diclofenac is brilliant stuff and AFAIK safe postnatally

Sounds gross, but the suppository version is fab for pelvic stuff

Oh I have never heard of It? I was thinking of asking for cocodamol as that has codeine in it with paracetamol but an anti inflammatory is probably better especially if it's strong on pain relief.

Definitely diclofenac.

user1486131602 · 31/03/2019 22:20

Diclofenic can cause liver probs, and should not be used if feeding yourself. Co-codamol would be better, but explain to dr and go with their advice

ShowOfHands · 31/03/2019 22:26

They won't prescribe diclofenac post cs round here. They used to.

What sort of pain are you experiencing? Have you got any help? Have you been taking painkillers to schedule?

Girliefriendlikescake · 31/03/2019 22:28

I took codeine, diclofenac and paracetamol post csection! And breast fed....

BellMcEnd · 31/03/2019 22:36

Is it co dydromol that you’ve been given? That contains codeine and you can take it together with either ibuprofen or diclofenac. Have you got cramping as well? A lot of people get colicky pain after a caesarean so peppermint tea may well help you. We use peppermint water in hospitals but I think there are new regulations about dispensing this without a prescription- could be wrong though so might be worth exploring.

Definitely aim to be taking the pain killers regularly as per the prescription - don’t leave it until you’re actually in a ton of pain. Also, and I know this seems counter intuitive but keep mobilising gently as this will help. If the pain changes or becomes a lot worse then you must seek medical advice.

Congratulations on your baby and I hope you feel better soon Flowers

They kept offering me tramadol after my csec, I don't know if you can BF with it as I am allergic so couldn't take it (which I had to explain multi times).

DIZZYTIGGER87 · 31/03/2019 23:03

Sorry posted too soon.

I managed on paracetamol and ibuprofen, taken regularly, whether I felt the need or not for 2 weeks before tailing off slightly.

The pain I'm getting is around the wound , basically post caesarean pain. I also get occasional tummy pain which I assume is contractions.

Thanks all. My GP gave me diclofenic as I'm not at risk for the conditions it is linked to. She also gave me cocodamol to alternate with and lactulose which is much needed too!

I'm drinking peppermint tea to help my tummy and I took delivery of my placenta capsules this afternoon so I can see if they make any difference to my postnatal recovery this time around.

On my postnatal ward everyone (I think at least!) was given paracetamol, ibuprofen and oramorph. They let you take home any that was left. Worked a charm for my caesarean pain. If you develop debilitating pain do get it checked out though - I thought I had cystitis but it was collections of blood in the uterus and underneath the wound. Couldn't walk before I'd had a pee in the morning, but it cleared up very quickly once I started on antibiotics.

moofolk · 01/04/2019 17:58

Diclofenac and co-codamol

Anything stronger makes you woozy and not ideal when you have a brand new baby.

BUT .....

Congratulations! ThanksThanks

C-sections can be rough, but I hope you abs baby are getting some snuggle time together and you are being well looked after.

Dalesgirl16 · 01/04/2019 20:05

Thanks, I'm glad I now have the winning combination. Getting out of bed is agonizingly painful. Wish I was ok with just paracetamol or ibuprofen!

Can I just say thanks again! I feel so much better today with these tablets! So much less pain! I'm much happier.
