Question RE formula feeding newborns

Hello :)

Genuinely thinking this one through. Breast fed babies tend to spend a long time on the breast feeding - whereas bottle fed babies tend to have more of a meal at once.

Does this cause any problems? Are babies designed to be more of a trickle feeder?

Just a thought going through my Sunday brain :)

There is paced responsive bottle feeding, where you feed baby at their own speed, giving breaks where necessary, which mimics breastfeeding. Apparently it reduces air intake and gassiness and helps prevent overfeeding.

One of the reasons breastfeeding is a protective factor against obesity is because it takes longer, so baby recognises they are satiated and falls asleep / comes off the breast.

My baby was breastfed up to 6 months and only used to take 10mins for a full feed, and feed every 4 hours.

Now she has bottles, she takes about 3 or 4 minutes to drink them

My DS used to take 45-60 minutes to drink a 2-3oz bottle when he was a newborn so don’t necessarily think ff is quick! Even at 3 months old it still took half an hour.
He got quicker as he got older of course.

Thank you - I just assumed they'd guzzle a full bottle.

I'll research the responsive feeding too :)

Both of mine were bf. DS1 was a guzzler, on and off the breast and back to sleep in no time. Was, and remains, fat. DS2 was a sipper and faffer. He sipped for a couple of minutes every 40-45 mins round the clock in a nightmare fashion that lasted till he was weaned at 2.5. He's skinny (they're adults now). Go figure 🤷‍♀️.

Are FF babies more likely to take dummies? I'm guessing you could try to do a bottle for the nutritional bit and a dummy for the comfort bit.

My formula fed baby is a grazer and has little and often, never a whole bottle in one go
