When can I give baby finger foods. He's 6 months & on porridge & pureed veg but I'm fearful of choking if I give him things like bananas, cheese puffs & toast

can he sit up in his highchair ok? If so it should be fine to try him on these things, just never leave him unattended when eating

Finger foods are fine to give now! Ideal size pieces are as big as your thumb - fingers of toast, banana, cooked carrot etc are all perfect. Maybe get booked on a child first aid course if you’re worried as that will go through choking.

If he’s 6 months and sitting ok you can definitely try finger foods. Just supervise closely and remember it’s fairly normal for them to gag a bit, which is not the same as actual choking.

my daughter has just turned 6 months and she loves these carrot flavoured giant wotsit things (sorry for the description ) should find them in any baby food bit in supermarkets etc, they melt in the mouth aswell so takes away the risk of choking etc

I was always worried about properly hard foods, and read that if you can squish it a bit, it'll be fine, so went with that. Eating in high chair only to start with. And I researched the difference between gagging and choking. He did a lot of gagging at first - scared the shit out of me!

Thank you everyone. Great advice on the First Aid class. & on the 'big cheesy wotsit things' (that made me laugh).

It terrifies me! But if I do a first aid class I think I'll feel more confident on it.

And yes he's sitting up in high chair fine

There's lots of videos on YT to show the difference between gagging and choking. It's just the way they get used to food.
