DS seems to want to stop wearing nappies. He is telling me he wants to wee and then actually doing one. He is very proud of himself and I am wondering if this means 'its time' (everyone has been telling me that I will know when its time). The main problem is that I have nothing except an old potty that has paint in it AND he seems to freak at the thought of a potty or EVEN WORSE the toilet. That means he will only wee outside. He is behaving like a dog, with a special area for weeing...I am so thrilled

So, what on earth shall I do? I was thinking of trying to find a special seat for the toilet for him in the hope that he will use that. Is it ok to have no nappy on at home and then use one whilst out, or is that sending mixed messages?

I have just had a second child and I was hoping for a few months until I had to do this, but I suppose I should go with it.

personally, i wouldn't recommend using a nappy when you go out and not one at home. if youo are going to go for it and potty train.....then just go for it completely.

i did that wiht both of mine and just used a disposable pampers changing mat for them to sit on in the car or buggy in case of accidents, but.....touchwood......we never had any where it was a problem!

He is def ready by the sounds on that.As for the freaking out there are a few options to try:
1)sticker chart and when he does a wee in the potty he gets a new sticker.
2)There is a potty sticker that you put in the bottom and when they wee it shows a picture(great little trading company does these)
3)musical potty. My son loved his.If he wee'd in it we let him press the button to hear the music
4)clap and cheer everytime he uses the potty or toilet(WARNING-you start doing this everytime even if your in public loos and start to feel a bit of a prat, but it works)

Where did you find the musical potty?

its hard work keeping up the clapping and cheering though isn't it? i was exhausted after about 4 days of cheering and enthusiasm!!!

Araghhhhh! Not sure if I have the energy right now. I will have to keep reminding myself that I will only have one set of nappies to wash soon.

I would offer my little boy a sultana or rice cake in return for peeing on the potty/toilet -which worked most of the time. Particularly useful when about to go out, saves lots of cross questioning 'are you sure you don't need a peepee??' etc...
Plus yay and whoo hoo etc...
I was so pleased when he peed in the appropriate place, not on the floor or in pants, I was genuinely cheering.

Mung · 11/07/2007 20:18

Does that mean then MM that you didn't ask at all. You just offered a reward for peeing?

If I recall correctly, I offered him bribes during the first week that I wanted him to use the potty with trousers up and down. He wasn't 'getting it' so I thought he needed a bit of extra encouragement. He would always sit down and try to do something. After a week he didn't need any encouragement and would just go of his own volition.
I would also generally offer him something if I wanted him to go before we went out and there was a time limit. I still do that sometimes.
About a month ago I offered him something to get him to go back on the toilet. He was OK with the toilet the first couple of times, then got all weird about it. So I offered him a bit of custard cream if he tried the big toilet and he did.
I don't know if that would work for all children, but it's worth a try.
He just goes by himself now, so it's all behind us now, but it was a good way to focus him.
I should probably add I did EC part-time with him from 14 months, so I had a reasonable idea of when he needed to go to the loo. Good times to try were after waking and after a meal.
Hope that helps a bit.
