How to wash 7.5-month-old's hair?

Normally get help with this but have to do it on my own today - little one has LOADS of lovely dark curls but they definitely need a wash today. Normally DH lies her back in the bath so that her hair dips in the water. Can't do this on my own. Don't have a shampoo shield. Have a bath seat. How can I do this safely without help?

Cruel mum here I just pour a cupful of water over my ds in the bathseat

Try putting a face cloth on her forhead to stop drips and sud and tip her head back slightly and use a plastic cup to tip water over her head. hair sounds gorgeous btw!

i only wash my ds2's hair about once a month - the shampoo companies would have us doing this every day if they could. it still looks lovely and shiny (very curly) could you just take the zen way and use a damp sponge if she has food in her hair?

Another ruel Mummy here too. I always pour cup fulls of water over ds's head.

Cut the mollycoddling now and tip cups of water over her or otherwise take her in the shower with you - I never went for this shampoo shield thing with DD or making it all into something that either of us would dread to me it is an integral part of being clean and with that she has no choice - she is now the only kid that I know who would strip in the middle of november to use an outdoor unheated pool (of course we soon stopped her when we realised how cold it was!!) and she really doesn't care about getting water in her eyes, up her nose or in her ears.

frogs · 09/09/2004 10:20

Tell it like it is, Twinkie!

Zinger, I don't see why you say you can't lie her back in the bath by yourself? One hand holding the baby leaves the other hand free to apply shampoo and slosh water over her head, surely?

Or do what my sister did with a baby and unreliable toddler together and run such a shallow bath that you can lie the baby right down without the water going over its face.

Agree with Twinkie, we faffed for ages with dd and consequently we had a real problem for ages with water on the face. Eventually her little cousin put paid to that by drenching her with a hosepipe, never looked back Took the cruel approach with ds and no problems, although he does look a little shocked at times!

Pidge · 09/09/2004 10:28

Yikes - have still never used shampoo on my dd (age 2)!! Mind you she is still a bit of a baldy and has never had to have a hair cut!

I always find the easiest thing to do is to have a bath with her - that way you can hold her nice and snug when you tip her back to pour water over her hair.

Twinkie - I definitely am guilty of the mollycoddling then, as dd now routinely says "Don't get water in my eyes"!! Not that she minds at the swimming pool, but a definite no-no during hair washing!

Far too much thrashing about to be held with one hand frogs! Shrub I've tried leaving her hair but it goes horrible after about a week. (Must start a separate thread about mixed-race haircare if there isn't already - that's a whole nother issue!)

She doesn't like water in her face much but I'll give it a go, with a cloth to hand to protect her from suds as you suggested pesme. Thanks!

Wimped out of tipping water all over her I'm afraid - didn't mind the idea of her getting water in her eyes but did not like the idea of shampoo in her eyes. (Yes, I do have to use shampoo, before you ask - have tried without and it doesn't work on her hair.)

So, I did as frogs suggested and let the little princess lie back in a very shallow bath. No probs.

Thanks everyone - I'm off to get on with some more mollycoddling ....
