Scarlet fever in toddler - experience, please?

Hello 😊

My 20mths DD had a fever on and off for a few days and I thought it was just a cold thing. The fever went and the next day she woke up with a strange rash on her abdomen, back and cheeks which the gp said was likely to be scarlet fever and prescribed antibiotics.

Has anyone else's child had this and how did they get on? We're on day two of the meds and she is so grumpy and angry - no fever, can still eat and drink but plays with toys for a few minutes before throwing them across the room. Like her normal toddler self but ramped up 100%!

I guess I'm after some reassurance that she'll start to feel better and cheer up soon...🙈

Xx

Is she having any pain relief?

When mine had he he was soooo poorly. His temperature was through the roof and his tongue was horrible, coated in thick white stuff that ame away and left his tongue looking so sore. Typical strawberry tongue.

Hope she feels better soon Flowers

My Dd has it when she was 3.
She was fine. Unwell but largely ok. Dd still suffers from dry skin years on though.
My sister had it when she was little and was admitted to hospital.
I think it’s just a case of watching for anything sepsis related.
Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and your Dd will be fine.

Thank you. So far her tongue seems okay but I'm staying vigilant. She's just very short tempered, mostly...I suppose I would be too! She's already had chicken pox and hand foot and mouth (twice) so I feel like we're playing illness-bingo Confused

@JiltedJohnsJulie I haven't given her anything as I'd possibly naively assumed that as she had no fever it wasn't necessary..but maybe I'll use calpol in case she has aches or soreness that she can't tell me about?

X

maybe I'll use calpol in case she has aches or soreness that she can't tell me about? it's definitely worth trying one dose to see if her mood improves Smile

My 6yo has just had it, the antibiotics taste yuck so I've been giving choc milk to wash it down. I would give calpol as her throat is probably sore. Mine recovered v quickly after starting antibiotics so hopefully your dd will be the same.

My son had this when he was about 3. He was slightly off colour for a few days but recovered speedily & well.
Def agree with giving a dose of calpol in case she's feeling poorly

karryk · 17/03/2019 12:58

Thank you all Smile the calpol didn't seem to do anything but she's only interested in grapes and yoghurt to eat now so I'm assuming her throat is sore. I'll give her another dose in any case. Hopefully she perks up a bit, tomorrow. Xx
