I need to buy my baby a monitor. It's the last thing to buy as I've been so conflicted on which one to buy. We only want audio (no camera)

It's between

Tommee tippee digital sound

BT 450 digital light show

Advent Phillips dect

Angel care ac403

Can anyone please recommend an audio monitor that is good and reliable, no interference, easy to hear etc I'm not worried about thermometer etc although most come with them now

The tenboo video monitor from amazon is very good and cheaper than all you've mentioned I think?

mummywingingit · 16/03/2019 09:56

We don't want a video one though ☹️ we want audio only and these are the ones I've got it down too...I just can't decide 🙈

I'm sorry I hate when people don't read the post and now I've done the same!

Sorry to be nosy but why the audio only?

NewAccount270219 · 16/03/2019 10:04

If a video monitor is the cheapest option then why not cover the camera (but not the microphone) with gaffer tape or similar? Not many people want audio only now so it's quite a niche product

NewAccount270219 · 16/03/2019 10:05

(also, depending on why you don't want video - and I note that this is for a baby not yet here - you could then 'get back' the video if you changed your mind)

CountessVonBoobs · 16/03/2019 10:06

Does it matter? Just pick the cheapest one on your list. If literally all you want is audio functionality they are all very much the same.

mummywingingit · 16/03/2019 10:35

My baby is here - 6 weeks

It does matter which one as it has to be right. Each has pro and con reviews so wanted to hear from actual people their review/opinion

I don't want a camera as pointless when I'm asleep I won't see anything! If something was to happen and caught on camera but doesn't alert me I see as pointless.

And all the ones I've listed are audio only, so they do exist!

I was looking for advice on if any of these are worth purchasing or a waste of money from experience

@Luckyduck88 that's okay, easy to misread when so many posts!

I have really bad eyesight so would struggle to see the screen and I personally see as pointless as if anything happens on the night and is recorded but I'm sleeping then I'm not sure how this would help. I know they are the in thing now, but just not for me.

I feel like you've misunderstood the point of a video monitor? They don't record, they're live - and they're also audio. The idea is that the sound would wake you, and then you'd look at the screen. Also, most people use the monitor not so much when asleep (are you not still in the same room at 6 weeks) but in the evening, when you're awake but the DC is (hopefully) asleep.

Obviously if you know you only want audio that's totally legit, but I do think the video gets more useful as they get older (DS is getting to the point that he can sit himself up and we look at the monitor and if he's sat up we know he's really awake and go, if he's still lying down we give it a few minutes to see if the moaning turns to crying, for instance) so it might be an option that you see the point of more in the future.

We used the tonnes tippee and it has been brilliant. We are still using it now with a 3 year old (both heavy sleepers and wouldn’t want to sleep through him calling for us, especially when he’s ill etc). Love the fact we can talk to him through the monitor - handy now he’s older to tell him to stop talking and go to sleep! Was also handy when younger if I was putting him to bed and needed OH to bring something up or whatever, he could reply and let me know he’s heard me without me having to holler down the stairs.

MaryBoBary · 16/03/2019 12:40

Having said that, I would next time go for the video monitor. As PP has said it would be handy to see what he’s up to when I am hear he’s not asleep. Sometimes he’s quite happy in there and if I were to go in it would probably hype him up, but would be handy to check e is actually in bed and not got up to play! Also sometimes when he was younger and would wake up periodically, sometimes he would have a little cry and then go back to sleep, other times he would be wide awake and crying - again would be handy to be able to see him and judge whether to go in to him, or leave him to go back off to sleep. Just a thought with hindsight.

If you just want a basic audio monitor, we bought this one for taking to grandparents house and it's perfectly good. Good range and easy to use.

However for normal day to day, I like having video. We use it during the day so we are not asleep but can keep as eye on baby to make sure they are ok, also handy as others have said to check if they really need you overnight or just having a wriggle and will settle. We have this one which is great.

Also you probably don't need one now as baby only 6 weeks. We didn't get one until baby went into own room for naps about 5 months.

SazCat · 16/03/2019 12:58

As PP have said, a video monitor is really useful when they are older and in their own room.

We originally thought there was no point and planned on getting an audio only one. But we had vouchers to use so got a Samsung video one.

We find our DD since around 12 months often cries out but she's actually still half asleep and will just have a wriggle and resettle. I think if we just had an audio one there'd be times we would go up to her when it wasn't really needed!

It's more for in the evenings when we are downstairs, like others have said. We have it on sound activation mode too so the screen just comes on when she makes noise.
