Nappy rash help!

DD is 2 weeks old and has nappy rash Sad I feel so guilty even though I change her often.

For the first week we were using cotton wool then we changed to wipes so I’ve gone back to wipes. I’ve been using sudocreme on her and it’s improving but not going away.

I’m going to try to air her bum out this evening although it might be messy Confused

Help!

Don't feel guilty! I've found it's one of those things that some babies are prone to. My DD had none and DS has had loads. The only thing I've found that helped is metanium, thick yellow stuff. I've never used it on a baby that young so read the instructions to check. Thin layer only but nothing else worked. Maybe try different nappies too? Hope it gets better soon x

First off change nappy brands as it may be a reaction to those. Dd had horrific nappy rash caused by nappies.

Then air as much as possible. Just pop a muslin or towel under her. Are you breastfeeding? Because breastmilk on a cotton ball and wiped over the skin and nappy off helps a lot in a short time. And metanium cream. It should help quite quickly.

My DS gets horrendous nappy rash regularly. What works for us in ascending order of rash situation:

Mild rashes:
Lots of fresh air on the bum - get some puppy pads and old towels, and line the cot or a space on the floor with them, so you don't need to worry if it gets messy
Regular baths, just warm water, no soap, and make sure the skin is fully dry afterwards
Frequent nappy changes, and quickly, as soon as the nappy is messed
Metanium every day cream (white cream)

Severe rashes, or if the above doesn't work:
Yellow metanium cream, or
Canesten cream (prescribed by the doctor), or if that doesn't work
Timodene cream (also on prescription)

Timodene is the last resort but it is very effective if nothing else works.

What nappies are you using?
Are you bf?
My DD had constant nappy rash - tried antibiotics and everything, the only thing that stopped it finally was stopping using Pampers, and switching to FF on medical advice (they poo less frequently so it gave her bottom time to recover).
However, that was extreme.
Other stuff which helped a bit was using metanium cream after every change & as much nappy off time as poss.

It’s been said already but metanium - it really is amazing stuff.

SlimGin · 15/03/2019 17:42

Yes the yellow metanium is the only thing that worked with dd. I also give her lots of nappy free time by putting an old towel under her on the changing mat, but I've seen such a huge difference since switching from sudocrem or white metanium to yellow metanium.

My LO 3 weeks has it when we switched t mo supermarket brand nappies. HV told me sudocteam is too strong for them at this age and to use bepanthen

Thanks everyone!

We’ve used a variety of nappies, the Aldi ones, then pampers and we are now back on the Aldi ones. Ive got reusable nappies which we’ve used a few times but they are a bit big on her at the moment so I will be switching to them soon.

I’ve put a thin layer of yellow metanium on this evening and I’ll be letting her go nappy free in a bit. Fingers crossed!

For nappy free time you can get pampers change mats - disposable mats, absorbent on the top and waterproof on the bottom so no leaks. If she wees/poos you can chuck it, if she doesn't use it again next time 👍

Hi

My little one had nappy rash from about 4 days old until about 3 months. It was nothing I did and no matter how fast I whipped off nappies the nappy rash was there.

For us it was nothing to do with the nappies, it was a contact rash from the pooh. he was breastfed and it's fairly watery and poohed 10 times a day! As I said, I would change it immediately but it made no difference.

In the end, we gave him nappy off time, can do this when he sleeps if need be, or just 10/20 mins throughout the day during changes, Even 5 mins at a change helps.

My boy napped on his change mat with a terry towel wrapped round his bum. We used bepanthan, its pretty gentle and gradually the rash went down, then reappeared and then went down... This went on until around 4 months when baby started shitting less.

I know it is stressful, but its not worth getting stressed over ( I did!) it will go down eventually if you just give airtime and find the right cream. Sudocrem didn't work for us and neither did metanium- all babies are different I believe. :)

The Aldi nappies were the problem for us - pampers, yellow metanium if there's any sign of a rash, canesten if very bad

I feel like new fresh babies are super sensitive and it’s hard to avoid a nappy rash. I used water wipes at first and have moved onto Aldi sensitive wipes and had no issues. I always pat dry the area with a clean cloth and then apply a small amount of metanium we use Aldi nappies too. She’s only ever had a really mild rash
