crispy nappies!

Hi
I've borrowed some motherease nappies from a friend, shaped all in ones with no attached water proof pants, which I want to use for my baby due in November. They've obviously been well used and they're a bit grey and discoloured and the toweling has gone quite hard and scratchy. I've tried using Ecover laundry bleach which hasn't really helped and I've decided I can live without them being dazzling white, but I think the 'crispy-ness' might be a tad uncomfy next to a new born's skin. Any ideas for softening them up?

Btw, I use prefolds for my 21 month old ds. They're too big for a newborn which is why I've borrowed these motherease ones, but they look brand new, bright white and lovely and soft. What has my friend done to make such a mess of hers!??!

HI there was a thread on this awhile back. Just tried to find it for you but there was some technical difficulty. The general consensus seemed to be put some white vinigar in the rinse cycle. I did this a few times and it did work but now I don't bother as the crispyness does make them nice and absorbant. Have you looked into cunning ways of folding prefolds for newborns? I used the oragami fold for dd when she was just a few weeks old.

Personally, and I am no expert, I think the motherease are too big for a newborn. However, it is probably detergent build-up that has made them hard and scratchy. White vinegar works to take the build up off. If the are clean, how about washing them on a 60 degree cycle with a mugful of white vinegar?
Also 10-20 minutes in the tumble-dryer (if you have one) before you hang them out works wonders to keep them soft.

I thought motherease were great for dd when she was newborn, took us awhile to work out how to fold them.

Okay, I don't really like my Motherease nappies they don't fit dd (4 months)very well. I do know alot of people who do like them though

If you have a tumble dryer it will make all the difference. I'm afraid I always tumble dry my motherease (I know, not v. environmentally friendly) and they're lovely and soft.

Hi.
try hanging the nappies out in the rain for a while, i dont have a tumble drier and often hang my ds s nappies out even if its raining, makes them much softer,

Hi- what did you do- put them through with just white vinegar?

vivie · 05/10/2004 22:22

They were clean so I put them on a quick wash cycle with vinegar in the fabric conditioner compartment, then line dried them. Seems to have made a real difference.

Ta- even though I put fabric cond in with dd's clothes- some of the trousers aare a bit 'hard'- I'll try to do this the next time I wash
