A DS1 gets older I find there is less and less that can be passed down and the problem I had at the baby stage was DS1 was a winter baby and DS2 a summer baby so lots of things were not pass-onable. So I suppose there haven't been as many hand me downs as I thought there would be with two boys.

meandmyflyingmachine · 12/07/2007 16:52

Oh but I loved dd wearing the clothes I loved for ds. There was one gorgeous jumper that I just couldn't wait for her to fit into. And now I have passed it on to my neice.

ChasingSquirrels · 12/07/2007 16:55

I haven't, but thats because ds1 had hand-me-downs from my cousins kids, which went back to my cousin for her sister, who (having had 3mc's) gave them to the charity shop the week before they found out I was pg with ds2 - I was gutted, there was some lovely stuff.

ds2 did have some hand-me-downs from friends though and will be into ds1's hand-me-downs that we kept soon - yay.

Clothes go from Ds1 to Ds2 to nephew,
My Mum moans that poor DS2 is second hand harry(?).
So he has new stuff as well, which means he has more clothes than he can ever wear.

i love getting hand-me-downs. dd is very well dressed courtesy of lots of lovely mumsnetters (& my insatiable shopping habit). i have given lots of ds's stuff to the little boy next door, but had a few bits left that dd wore. i have now handed them onto my cousin for her little boy which makes me super-happy (maybe i am weird, but apparently she likes them too).

HappyDaddy · 12/07/2007 17:12

My mum didn't.

Only cos I was tall and thin and my younger brother was short and wide.

cylonbabe · 12/07/2007 17:16

i used to when they were younger of course. but now that the kids are older, i find that ther is absolutley no wear left in them.
and dc3 is a girl, so except for jammies, she has had everything new this year. actually, she had new pyjamas as well

dsisters and i do handme downs to each other. in fact now that i have lost weight and am same size as big sis, we raid each others wardrobes for stuff to wear

TheRealMrsWeasley · 12/07/2007 17:17

My mum knows a woman (DIL of a neighbour) who brought a load of clothes her ds1 had outgrown to the charity shop my mum volunteers at - the woman also had a ds2 then and since has had another child - my mum was definitely a bit outraged that the woman was not keeping the things for her ds2 - though in her defence I wondered if maybe they were things her ds1 had been given as presents (you know how you get loads for the first baby) that she didn't really like. Maybe she had kept the ones she did like....

mad4girls · 12/07/2007 17:30

We had quite a lot of unisex stuff from dd from Gap (she is definitely a Weasely in terms of colouring so pink didn't suit her). Her two brothers have worn it since and it is good enough to pass on to another child. It's lovely to see a friend's child wearing something of ours and remembering when mine used to wear it...

tuppy · 12/07/2007 18:03

Years ago at a dreadful dinner dh persuaded me to go to (=work colleagues/partners) I was making small talk with another "wife of" character; I then had ds1 and 2 with 21m gap, she had 2 dds with a similar small gap. I remarked that with same sex siblings "at least no 2 gets to wear all the great stuff from no 1 which got barely worn ".

"oh no I start from scratch each time, don't you ?" (sneer)

gegs73 · 12/07/2007 18:04

DS2 has hardly got any clothes we bought for him all handed down. Only new things he has got are presents or if I have felt poor little mite and bought him a baby gro if I am out splashing my cash on clothes for DS1.

lizziemun · 12/07/2007 18:13

No i don't know anyone who doesn't pass on second clothes.

I passed all my on and will get back when needed for 2dc.

I had hand me up clothes as my sister who is 4 years younger then me was always bigger then me so i got her clothes .

Legacy · 12/07/2007 18:28

DS2 is in ALL DS1's old clothes, but funnily enough he has a preference for different ones (e.g. DS1 liked zip ups, DS2 likes pull-over head type tops) so they are actually wearing (and looking) different combinations really.

Have also bought stuff off eBay.

nooka · 12/07/2007 19:30

I'm the youngest of four and hardly had anything new to wear until I was almost a teenager. As a result I rarely had clothes that I would have chosen, and have lots of sad memories of going to school in grey socks that all the other girls (with their nice holey white socks) laughed at. As a result I pass very little down from ds to dd. Also they are almost the same size and completely different colouring. What suits ds would not suit dd at all. And besides I love buying her clothes!

MadEyeMisdee · 12/07/2007 19:31

dd1 clothes dont generally get handed down to dd2.

DrNortherner · 12/07/2007 19:35

My ds gets hand me downs from his cousin, it's fabbola.

I know a woman who has 2 ds's and she does not hand down and openly admits it. She wants to make them both the same and spend equal amounts on both. She bought them both a house when hey were born. Yes, a HOUSE.

nomdeplume · 12/07/2007 19:37

I don't hand down.

DS1 & 2 have, until recently, been the same size in clothes. They have never 'shared' or had hand me downs because they have always had very different styles.

DD was born 8 years after DS2 and so a) it was too late for her to have any hand me downs from him as the age gap was so huge, and b) she is a girl.

lucykate · 12/07/2007 19:46

ds is the recipient of loads of hand me downs from his cousins, have hardly had to buy him anything, just filled in the gaps. even his shoes are hand me downs from a friend atm, but i have a bag in the loft of about 10 pairs of size 7, 7.5 and 8's, all still in good nick, all clarks.

dd is the provider of hand me downs as she's the oldest girl, he stuff gets passed on to her 3yr old cousin.

one of my sil's is not really a hand me down person though, she prefers new.

i regularly go round the local charity shops and buy clothes for the dc's, and car boot sales for toys. we got a wooden elc garage for ds for £3.

FuriousGeorge · 12/07/2007 19:57

Nearly all the dd's clothes are hand me downs or charity shop finds & I am continually told how well they are dressed. In fact,2 of my friends who live near to each other, pass clothes around in a circle as we have 6 girls between us.We always laugh at the fact that the children have all gone to the same pre school,so the staff there must have seen the same outfits on half a dozen children.
