Milton sterilising smells!!

Hi all. At the moment my LO is having expressed breast milk via bottle due to letting my nipple heal from damage.

We cold water sterilise with Milton and I find it has such a strong smell. I dilute a capful to 5 litres as instructed and have found there is a chloriney smell that doesn’t go away. Even when I taste my milk before feeding to double check it’s ok, my milk tastes Miltony. She has also had some smelly poos and farts since taking the bottle and I can only put it down to Milton as it’s the only change.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the smells? I’m worried they’ve permeated the materials now.

I used Milton after having my 1st, I know what you mean about the smell. But then with my 2nd and 3rd I use a microwave steriliser, it really was a godsend! No more boiling the kettle multiple times a day and all that rinsing and swilling etc. Would you consider swapping? Its so time-saving. You can also buy little sterilising bags that hold 1 bottle, so (if you're making bottles as you go) and visiting people you can ask to use their microwave, just add water to the bag, it takes a couple of minutes.

Hi yes I could try that! Thanks for the suggestion Mumsymumphy.

I just wonder how to get the smell off the bottles now I’ve used them with Milton. Any ideas?

You can also sterilise in a pan of booking water for 5 mins.

I was just coming on here to post about the Milton cold water steriliser. My LO is 7 weeks and has pretty much been EBF. However since he was born we’ve had the cold water steriliser set up with breast pump bits and bottles for very occasional use. I change the water every day but have noticed it’s really degrading the teats and rubber bits of the pump, turning them cloudy and leaving a sticky film. I’m going to try a microwave steriliser instead! Just need to find which is best for us!

I know off topic but have u tried nipple shields?

ew1990 · 08/03/2019 19:42

I'm not 100% sure but I'm sure you don't have to sterilise for EBM. It's only for formula

ew1990 · 08/03/2019 19:46

Ignore me I'm wrong lol. According to Google it's just the breast pump that's fine with how soapy water

Hmm I have never had any sticky film come from it. I found through some research if you let it dry in the sun the chlorine evaporated? I tried it and it helped but I also boiled it after. Still slightly there but a lot better.
