vinegar and cloth nappies

Hi, I used to buy Safeways distilled clear vinegar to do my last nappy rinse with but since it's changed to a Morrisons they don't stock cheap clear vinegar anymore... so I've tried tescos and they only do dark malt, no saver range in Sains, and have checked Asda's website which didn't seem to show any (haven't checked in the shop as it's a bit of a trek).. Any other suggestions on where to buy cheap clear vinegar? TIA

No idea Karen - sorry - but I though I'd say hi!

Actually now I think of it - maybe Lidl/Kwiksave/Aldi type cheap supermarkets would be worth a try - they seem to stock massive bottles and packs of most things?

karen99 · 08/09/2004 15:38

yes, good idea mudda.. completely forgot about them.. we have an aldi nearby.

hello to you too! and little ds (or rather not so little now being 2!!) Isn't the party today?

I got a big bottle in the co-op. Does it bleach rainbow bots, do you know?

Hey Karen are you selling nappies on the nappy lady site? I have seen a huge advert posted by Karen.

Actually, when dd was bf exclusively I used vinegar - it didn't work very well, so I resorted to (expensive) oxyclean. I haven't really needed anything since I have started mixed feeding but my rainbow bots are fading Maybe it's inevitable?

Vinegar ensures all the washing powder has been properly washed out of the nappies, also lessens the smell I find as I soak the nappies in water and vinegar.

Hi MrsD! no, not me on the nappy board.. but will take a look!

I use the vinegar like fuzzywuzzy to remove last traces of liquid. It does give them a slight smell but we've learnt to live with it.. I put in about half a mug in the conditioner compartment.

[mudda, glad your day (ds' day!) was good, weather has been brilliant for it! Are you coming on Fri?]

I have bought clear white vinegar from Tesco - check with them again - they probably do stock it. Make sure you don't get the spiced one - DH came home with a big bottle last week - small print says spices included - uggh !

We live in a hard water area - vinegar helps to soften the nappies - no problems with bleaching so far.

MrsDoolittle · 09/09/2004 09:57

That's interesting Throkenholt, I didn't know vinegar helps to soften the nappies too. We live a terribly hard water area.
Karen, did you not get on with your redrap then. Funny, I was onto the nappy lady this morning asking about them. Dd was terribly sweaty last night, I think it woke her up.

throckenholt · 09/09/2004 10:20

vinegar is an acid - hardness in water is alkali - that acid helps to neutralise the alkali. I think washing powder may be alkali as well - so the vinegar helps with that as well.

Some people say you shouldn't use too much powder because it sticks on the nappies and makes them hard.

You can also do a pre-wash with no powder if you like which helps especially if you are not soaking the nappies before washing (too much hassle in my experience).

MrsDoolittle · 09/09/2004 10:23

Thank for that throkenholt - I am going out to restock my vinegar supply

karen99 · 09/09/2004 11:03

Will have another look in tescos. This was in one of the large superstores though so I was hoping they had it.. will try my small local one instead!

Hi MrsD, I really like the redrap but for some reason, as it's not elasticated along the front waist it doesn't fit my ds well and seems to wick onto his pj top... But the concept works and he was much 'drier' in the morning everywhere else! My ds didn't get on with the tots pul wrap either and they are the same style.. Interested? (I think it's the wrong size for you though..)

Definitely if you're not using any of the ME nappies try selling them on.. they have a good resale value.. or you could start with what you want for them and gradually lower (which is what I've had to do with the redrap).

Hey Karen - I have succumbed and ordered a few beautiful looking nappies from cutie patooties Do you have any?

karen99 · 09/09/2004 12:05

no.. but they look REALLY cute! Unfortunately since giving up work to be a full time mum I can't go on the nappy spending sprees I used to do... started a thread a week or so ago about attempting to make my own.. still trying to figure out my mum's sewing machine, but hopefully I'll get a chance to have a go soon enough!

Which ones did you get

by the way i have used 'NON BREWED CONDIMENT' instead of vinegar and it seems to work as well... somwhere must sell it in bulk for all the chippies to use...

MrsDoolittle · 09/09/2004 12:38

Medium sized nappies - sherpa fleece and rainbow and a medium ladybird wrap. I really like the large nappy designs but I'm sure they will be too big.
I can't afford it either really and I ought to get a redrap instead. Poor dd was sweating last night Or maybe a polkabot wrap?
