I haven't. Although I do have a Penelope Leach on the shelf which I picked up in a second hand shop, but never actually looked at it.

I have a large collection of Victorian health books with child-care sections which are vastly amusing.

TraceyP · 08/09/2004 14:36

Read them all, threw them away, did what felt right.

clairabelle · 08/09/2004 14:36

My dad is the font of all my knowledge, totally sensible. Mind you you think he had brought us up single handed no mention of dm {grin] however she has gone from cool and collected parent to worry over everything nana

me always done what felt right and argued with anyone who said I was wrong

clairabelle · 08/09/2004 14:39

Talking of victorian books my mum has a medical text book on childcare from her training and that strongly advocates reinforcing the blind theory with regards to young men and their winkies amongst other such gems

ponygirl · 08/09/2004 14:40

Me neither. I bought the Great Ormond Street child care book when I was pg with ds1, but that's it. It's got some tips on parenting in it, but I tend to use it as a medical handbook. I've followed my instincts. (Hah! poor kids!)

Frenchgirl · 08/09/2004 14:40

never used one, dd's 5 and we're all still alive and talking, so can't have done that badly using common sense....
however, have got 2 books for the puppy

MeanBean · 08/09/2004 14:40

Blimey, when did your mum train?!!

MeanBean · 08/09/2004 14:41

Meant that for Clairebell...

and they so love to fiddle from such an early age

acnebride · 08/09/2004 14:46

Wow meanbean and clairabelle, have often wanted to read either original past childcare manuals or studies of them. just so that can relax about current 'essential' advice!

clairabelle · 08/09/2004 14:50

I've told this story before on MN and am digressing from the subject but it does make me laufg, my 3 year old nephew was in floods the other night as he told my dsil he had broken his winkie, turned out it had gone a little bit hard. Didn't deter him though as he was back in 10 minutes '' It's broken again Mummy''

coddychops · 08/09/2004 14:51

me
read them all though

tammybear · 08/09/2004 14:52

mum gave me a couple but have never looked at them, except for the time when dd was very young and i was trying to top and tail her and werent really sure what i was doing

edam · 08/09/2004 15:09

Read a few but never 'conformed' to any orders as such. Just treated them as sources of information and opinion (and bitched about the ones that are too extreme/daft ? and this isn't a coded reference to Gina, I'm thinking about someone very different). Also had good debates with my mother about what parents were told in her day ? I think she realised parenting gurus weren't the voice of God in her day so probably her doing that I don't fall down and worship them either.

edam · 08/09/2004 15:10

Should point out I don't treat my mother as the voice of God, either! Too bloody minded to listen to anyone, probably...

TeriS · 08/09/2004 15:20

I just go with what I feel is right too, although lots of times I'm sure I'm jsut making it up as I go along!

Best peace of advice my mum gave me about parenting: "The main problem with 'baby books' is that the baby hasn't read them". I always keep that in mind.

Anyway, I've not yet found a baby book that tells you what to do when you discover you've given birth to the son of satan!

lou33 · 08/09/2004 17:16

Never used one. Got a book about pregnancy with number one, but only from a how big are they noe perspective. I go with my instinct.

hercules · 08/09/2004 17:25

Only pregnancy type thing for how big baby is and medical book. Much rather go with my way than someone elses.

fio2 · 08/09/2004 17:28

I have NO childcare books at all

did have miriam stoppard but didnt read it until dd started having 'problems', found special needs children were refered to as BACKWARD!!!! so chucked it in the bin

sis · 08/09/2004 20:49

I haven't - although dh bought toddler taming when ds was about two and a half because neither of us had a clue about when and how to potty train. Didn't use the book for anything else.
