Will I need a double pram/buggy?

Got an almost 1 year old, and freshly pregnant with our second.

The new baby (all being well of course) will be due November 2nd approximately and there will be 1 year 8 months between them.

Will I 100% need a double pram?

Any tips regarding a side by side configuration or a tandem?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks all!

I definitely would with 2 under 2, even if your eldest is good at walking everywhere with you there are times when it's just safer as they tend to want to head off in their own direction.

Personally I never got on with a tandem as I found the length hard to judge with corners plus going up and down kerbs was heavy and awkward. Side by side was much easier for me as the weight was evenly distributed but there were a handful of places in our town where doors/pavements were too narrow.

My gap is 2 and 2 months and I put off getting one until the little one ended up being 6 months. I wish I’d gotten one from the beginning though as it would have helped me get out more. My toddler is a good walker but really quite lazy so a double works perfectly for us. My friend had a gap similar to yours and bought a double but her DS walks better and hated it. But they’re easy to sell on if you buy a second hand one. I got a second hand out n about nipper which I love and I’ve not found a door it doesn’t fit through yet...

I have a similar gap between dc2 & 3 and Although we already had a double buggy I hardly used it. I found it much easier to stick the wee one in a sling on the odd occasion we were going to be walking too much for dc2

It really depends on the child though. My nephew was a bit later at walking and still relied on a pram a lot at that age.

Wait til closer to the time and see how he's getting along at walking rather than splashing out on one right now.

Thanks so much that is all really great advice!

Definitely will be waiting to get anything and also will be going second hand as I've learnt how much money is wasted first time round.

I was thinking about whether it would be easier with a single buggy and just have the newborn in a sling but DS never took to a sling so concerned new baby may be the same Grin

Even if your older child is good at walking when the baby comes along, he might also still be napping, or be a bolter! With your age gap, I’d prepare for transporting 2 children, whether by double buggy, or by buggy and sling. I have a 3 year gap. Dc2 was born in the autumn, the double buggy was really handy for getting dc1 to nursery that winter. I didn’t have it for long, but it was invaluable for the 9 months that I did. I bought it on eBay and sold it on for £7 less than I paid for it.

22 month gap. They are now 14 months and just 3. We've used double tons as older one is only just dropping his nap so it's been essential for a long time as we are out a lot and can't guarantee to be home for naps.

Have a Mountain Buggy Duet which is great. Fits through all normal sized doors and on buses etc.

Gap of 2yr 2months here and I had a Phil and Ted's until my older child was 3 and a half. It was invaluable. Didn't want a side by side because I don't drive and we relied on buses, and it was fine to get on and off and fit in the buggy space. But it was like a tank, heavy, unwieldy, very hard to push with two heavy kids along sloping pavements, and it was a happy happy happy day when DS1 finally became reliable enough to hold hands and walk (he has ASD) and I sold it for almost what we'd bought it for and reverted to my trusty little Bugaboo Bee.

Best of luck!

Double buggy and perseverance.
I managed to get mine (14 months apart) napping at the same time every morning after a walk!

Yip you will need one, save yourself any headaches and prepare to get one.

My girl is 22 months and can walk well but would get tiered. Not to mention the fact that she wld run away and sometimes refuses to take your hand so she wouldn't hold on nicely to a pram.

Yes definitely recommend getting one. I have 23 months between my 2 and eldest walked well when baby was born but rediscovered her love for pushchair after seeing him sit in one! Also, too young to rely on her to stay next to me when queuing to pay or stopping to do something. As others have said, they also still get tired at that age so will need somewhere to rest.

I do occasionally do sling and single too but the double is invaluable. Definitely agree with comments to get second hand and side by side. Mountain Buggy would have been my preference but barely any second hand in my area so we got Babyjogger City Mini double which majority of parents with 2 have where I am. Dream to push, lightweight and as slim as a double can be. Can get a carrycot for newborn but we used a cocoon
