Car Safety

Firstly apologies, I am not a Mum but a 70 year old fuddy duddy Grandad. I have searched the internet to find the answer to a safety question. We were visiting our Daughter when I was left in charge of getting our 5 year old Grandson out of the car, I undid his car seat and asked him to get out, he went to the off side door saying he wanted to get out at that side, I explained that it was dangerous and he needed to come back to me at the kerb side, I also stated that it was illegal to allow a child out of the car on the offside, and that is my query, I genuinely believed it was illegal, but cannot find any proof, I was hoping someone out there could advise me on the subject.
Even if it is not illegal he still isn’t getting out roadside when I am responsible.

No I don't think it's illegal. It is safer for them to get out on the pavement side

I can’t remember seeing it in the Highway Code and there have been times when I need to get my toddler out the road side but it isn’t the safest option.

Update on my original question, I have probably broken copyright laws but thought this is important.
Highway Code

  1. Children in cars, vans and other goods vehicles.Drivers who are carrying children in cars, vans and other goods vehicles should also ensure that Children Should Get Into The Vehicle Through The Door Nearest The Kerb ● child restraints are properly fitted to manufacturer’s instructions ● children do not sit behind the rear seats in an estate car or hatchback, unless a special child seat has been fitted ● the child safety door locks, where fitted, are used when children are in the vehicle ● children are kept under control.

Highway code for Children

Rules for children:
Do not block the driver’s view in the mirror.
Make sure you do not distract the driver.
Never lean or wave out of the window or throw anything out.
Only open doors and windows when you have been told it is safe to do so.
Always Use The Door On The Pavement Side Of The Car When Getting Out.

I doubt it’s illegal. Of course it’s safer but not always practical. What if you have multiple toddler or baby seats in the back? Not
all kids would be physically capable of clambering over.
