Fell asleep whilst winding baby please help

Last night we had an incredibly unsettled night with our 9 day old newborn. He wouldn’t settle in his basket at all and woke up constantly.

As a result I was exhausted and managed to fall asleep in bed whilst winding him - waking up when his neck/head drop backed. I was so out of it that this happened about three times in quick succession before I came around.

I am absolutely terrified that I have hurt him but don’t know how to check for sure. I feel so guilty and stupid I don’t know what to do.

Do you think he will be okay?

Was he like that for long OP? I'm sorry I don't know if he will be affected by this, has he been ok today?

If you are BFing, have you tried feeding lying down, you can do this and snooze. Personally I wouldn't bother winding a BF baby in the night.

As for getting him to sleep in his crib. Try getting using a T-shirt DH has worn as the sheet. White noise and swaddling might help LO to settle on there as well.

Have you got the guidelines on safe bed sharing too? This might help if you both doze off whilst you are feeding him lying down Smile

If you have someone at home with you, could you hand over LO after your next feed and send them out for a walk or drive and get sone sleep?

Congratulations on your new LO Thanks

Are you breastfeeding? If so I would 100% start feeding lying down and cosleeping. If baby won't settle elsewhere it's the way which will get you some sleep and massively reduce the risk of you dropping off upright with him, which is dangerous. I also agree with Julie that if he is breastfed I wouldn't bother winding at night.

This has happened to me and loads of other bf'ing mums I know. I was panicked the first time and I called SIL, she just laughed and said it happened with DN loads.
We all have healthy babies with perfect head control. As long as their heads don't flick back and forth at speed and they can breath at all times it's fine, no harm done.

Conversely, if you're bottle feeding wind standing up (baby up over shoulder), stand, pat back and rock/sway to get baby back to sleep.

Also wait until he is properly asleep before putting him down. I tell my husband to wait until baby is asleep, then give it another 15 minutes before attempting to put him down, once he's deeply asleep.
