When should I start transitioning toddler into a bed?

My DS is 2, will be 3 at the end of the year & I am just wondering when would be the best time to transition him into a bed? He is still in a cot. He is extremely fidgety and he turns all directions throughout the night.. sideways, lengthways, head / tail ways.. you know what I mean lol so my main worry is him falling out but obviously they'll be bed bars so he should be OK hopefully!

Wanted to also mention that He is not potty trained as of yet. I tried back in December after he turned 2 when I had a week off work but he was not ready for it. I have another week off work soon so I am going to try doing it again! I'm not sure how it'll go, but I know when he is potty trained, he is going to need to get out of bed to use the potty but most likely will wear pull ups.

Anyway! When do you think is the best time to move him into a bed? Do you think one of these are suitable?

(I will not be paying that much! Just an example Grin)

Thank you.

Advice my friends gave me was leave it as long as you can, as it can badly disrupt their sleep as they can start getting out of bed continuously. The older you leave it the more they understand they are tired and need sleep and therefore stay in bed. If they are climbing out or the cot is too small you have no choice though.

DS is in a cot bed, we took the sides off when he was 3.5. We started mentioming we could take them off from about 3, but he wanted them to stay - he suddenly changed his mind at 3.5 ish. We had no trouble with the transition but then it was the same bed just no sides.

I personally think the opposite of the previous poster and would do it sooner rather than later.

We waited until oldest was almost 3 and it was a nightmare, he fully understood he could come out and how much it frustrated it and turned it into a game. Every bedtime a nightmare, for months. So with our youngest we did it at 18 months, he still was in the cot so falling out not an issue but he could get out. He was so young he really hardly noticed the change and just got out in the mornings. Bedtime almost never an issue.

That is my experience but everyone has different stories.

Also with the potty training you have to wait until their ready, just 2 is a bit young imo I'd wait until almost 3. But again every child is different

We’ve just done it with my DD who is just about to turn 3. Again it’s a cot bed so same bed but with side off. No issues as yet. We’ve put a bed guard on the side to stop her falling. If we had done it sooner, I think we would have had some really tricky times with her climbing out at bedtime etc as she went through a bad phase of not settling at night. So I’m glad we waited. I should say, she is not yet potty trained (which is a WHOLE other thread...!) but I’m guessing she will be in pull ups for some while yet even once she is. (Going to give it ANOTHER go during Easter hols).

Should say, we made a big deal of her getting new bedding and a new duvet for the new bed as she had been in a sleeping bag up until then. She was excited about it.

moleeye · 02/03/2019 20:18

We took the bars off of her cot bed at 2.5 and moved her into an adult single bed when she was 3.5. Decorated her room (just a lick of paint and freshening up) and new bed linens etc.

She's 4.5 now and she loves her big girl bed

Potty trained her at 20 months so she was dry in the day but didn't bother doing night time until she was 3. Couldn't face it before then!!

Jackshouse · 02/03/2019 20:28

My DD went into a big girl bed (double with bed guards) from my bed at 22 months with no problems. She has been toliet trained for 9 months now and has only once woken up needing the toliet and she shouted for me to come and get her to take her to the loo.

Biancadelrioisback · 02/03/2019 20:35

I took the sides off just after his 2nd birthday. He didn't even notice

moretractorsplease · 02/03/2019 20:37

I think now may be a little soon, but as with everything, it's up to you and what's best for you DC. They're all different! We took the sides of DS cot when he was 2.5 mainly because he'd started a new phase of screaming all evening and standing up in the cot so needed a change of direction. We make it exciting and grown up, bought dinosaur bedding etc. Told him he can't get out in the night, bought a bed rail. It's been ok and he was ready for the move. But each to their own! You'll find the right time I'm sure. Ps that bed looks beautiful!

BasinHaircut · 02/03/2019 20:38

We put DSin a bed at 2.5, but only because he learned how to climb out of the cot and it was dangerous.

I wouldn’t bother with a toddler bed if he is a fidget. He will just fall out. DS went straight into a double and at almost 6 still can’t sleep in a single without ending up on the floor.

happymummy12345 · 02/03/2019 20:39

We did it at 17 months. Ds was happy in his cot, but I knew he would be even happier in a bed. And he was, he loved it.

Byebyefriend · 02/03/2019 20:48

I put up single but low to floor bed in ds room just before he was 2 (I was due dd two weeks after) incase I had a c section. He went in 3 weeks ago at 2 year 3 months for nap one day and decided that's where he was sleeping from now on.

He now takes longer to get to sleep and he gets up earlier because he can get straight out rather than turning over and going back to sleep. So I would leave him be unless your trying to free up cot for a new occupant!

sighrollseyes · 02/03/2019 21:03

Moved my DS from cot to toddler bed at 18 months as I was due to have surgery which would have made it hard for me to lift him in/out cot. He was fine in his toddler bed.

JimJamJarmusch · 03/03/2019 10:03

It wouldn't even occur to me to do it until my child could climb out of the cot. DD still can't at 2.5 so she'll stay in cot till she can! If she cracked climbing out sooner, I'd have done it then. But that's just me!

Caterina99 · 03/03/2019 14:38

We took the side off the cot at around 21months as DS could climb out. He was fine. No issues at all. A few months later we moved him to a new room with a single bed as new baby was getting the cot. Again he was totally fine.

NerrSnerr · 03/03/2019 14:40

We moved my daughter into a bed when she turned 3. She never tried to climb out. We moved her because we needed the cot for her brother.
