1 year old banged mouth and tooth pushed into gum

My 1 year old had sat on his truck backwards and it's tipped and he landed on his mouth, his baby teeth are just coming through but I'm sure his middle tooth isn't showing as much as it was, is it possible it's been pushed into the gum? It's bleeding so hard to tell as he won't let me look at it, at the dentist at 2pm

Oh goodness the poor lil guy! How did he get on at the dentist? Hope you're both doing okay OP xx

Oh bless you. My friend’s toddler had a nasty accident and had to have her two front lower teeth surgically removed. Hopefully it just looks less visible because of the swelling.

Thankyou both Smile it bled a lot so was really panicking he might lose it and it's only just come through he was quite late with his teeth. They said it's really swollen so hard to tell as he thinks the swelling may be covering part of the tooth like you say so have to go back Friday and again in a week, he has split the skin that attaches his top lip to his gum too, bloody kids hey!

I have a sister who did similar but with adult teeth Confused once the swelling went down teeth were normal. Fingers crossed your little ones tooth will be fine

SinkGirl · 27/02/2019 18:18

Oh bless him. I know how awful it is when they hurt themselves (I have twin boys with ASD and no sense of danger), early on I’d spend at least 3 times as long crying as they did for every scary fall! Hopefully it will be okay when the swelling subsides - have you given him some baby ibuprofen?

DD did this when she was about 3, fell flat on her face on my mum's driveway. No blood actually, but the tooth went into the gum. Dentist said it would probably just die which it did. It went sort of grey. I hated it because I was worried people would think I hadn't cared for her teeth and it was rotten. Ridiculous I know. It eventually came out when she started losing her baby teeth. There was no lasting damage at all. I hope your little fella is OK!

My dd3 knocked her two front teeth into her gums when she was 16 months and I was heavily pregnant with dc4.
Took her to a&e as lots of blood.
They wanted to do a general anaesthetic and remove the teeth.
I wanted a second opinion and refused.
They weren’t very nice to me and said I was refusing due to the emotion of being pregnant..
took her to a private dentist who said I was absolutely right to refuse, leave it and the teeth would come down.
It took a long time but they did though one was crooked.
She’s 8.5 now and a year ago they both fell out and only one has come through again.

Anyway the point to my epic post is that it can take a while and to get a second opinion if you’re not happy.

Sink I know it's horrible isn't it, I cried on the phone to the dentist, in my defence I'm 5 months pregnant Grin he has had paracetamol but will give him ibuprofen next time

TheFormidable glad she was ok bless her, I banged mine in my 20s and it went wobbly and grey so had a root cancel as it had died, it's still a bit grey now so was worried about him losing it and waiting years for the next lot

Girlsyearapart I'm 5 months pregnant too and was a wreck on the phone to the dentist, so glad you got a second opinion, they did say if it's gone up it should make his way back down so fingers crossed. Glad your DD was ok and didn't lose them both

Dd did similar, although she was nearly 2 so the push back into her gum was obvious. Like yours, a paediatric dentist said the tooth should come back down OK, which it did. He was concerned that the tooth bud of the adult tooth could have been damaged by the tooth knocking into it, but luckily it has come down fine. Was a wait and see situation which luckily panned out. Hope your ds is OK (and you too!).

girlsyearapart · 27/02/2019 19:49

The dentist thinks the other one will grow too so hopefully in the future you’d never know what happened.
I have all too vivid memories of sitting in the a&e waiting room wearing a white t shirt stretched over my bump covered in blood with a very sad goofy toddler 😢

Shantotto · 28/02/2019 20:21

This happened to my 3 year old recently. We thought he’d swallowed it as there was a gap and it wasn’t in the floor! Turned out it had been pushed back into the gum entirely. Our dentist sent us to a specialist pediatric dentist.

He examined him and unfortunately the tooth had been entirely pushed back into the gum but into the wrong place! It was basically a foreign body in the gum. It had to be removed under local anaesthetic which was very traumatic - more for me than him - and it was on my birthday of all days!

It’s a waiting game now to see if there’s damage to his adult teeth. His teeth are getting gappy now because there’s the space so we’ll have to see what happens next.

I bloody searched hysterically for that tooth for ages!

Floozymum · 14/03/2019 10:45

@Shantotto did they do an X-ray to find the tooth in the gum or was it just obvious? My 1 year old did did the same thing on Monday (on his first birthday!!) the front tooth has completely disappeared. We are lucky we were able to take him to an emergency paediatric dentist but couldn't get an X-ray as he wouldn't stay still. So no one is quite sure where it is.

Shantotto · 14/03/2019 13:49

@Floozymum We were referred to a specialist paediatric dentist but luckily he didn’t need to x-ray. It was obvious to him it was up in the gum but in the wrong place. Our normal dentist spotted it has gone back into the gum but thought it might be in the right place, but wanted the referral to try for the x Ray. I spent ages looking for a fallen out tooth!

We were worried for a while he’d swallowed it too, a relief he hadn’t!
