Imaginery friend- too far?

Am currently being shouted at by my five year old because I didnt give his imaginery friend a meal at dinner. Apparantly this is 'mean' of me and 'benben' (the imaginery friend) is apparantly really upset. This while thing started a few months back and I initially thought it was sweet, however it is now getting to the point where my son is refusing to go to school because 'benben' will be lonely.

I dont know if this has got to a slightly worrying stage of imagination?

My daughter has quite a few 'friends' and she takes them seriously too.. have you tried maybe suggesting that benben could stay at home and help you do a few boring jobs and look after his toys to make sure they all behave? Or that benben will be going to his own special school while your son goes to his? And that you will bring benben when you go to pick him up? Sounds silly i know but that sort of thing seems to work well for my daughter but she is 3.5 so different ages.. If you're not too happy about the shouting i've found that telling dd that her friend will have to go home if she isn't good works too, I usually just say if you're not being good when so and so is here they'll have to go home and come another day

Sounds a little creepy. What if it's some ghost he sees. How scary
