Birthday presents

Hi everyone, I have a bit of a weird question. My son is turning 2 soon, and I've gotten him lots of books for his birthday, a few learning toys etc but I'm struggling with anything else. I mentioned to my MIL about getting him things he needs or decorations for his room and she's made me feel like I'm in the wrong for getting him stuff he needs for his birthday and not more toys.. I've got him a summer hat, a toothbrush holder, a lovely canvas for his room, and some other little things he needs.. He doesn't need them urgently, it's not summer yet, he shares a toothbrush holder currently with me and his Dad, and the canvas is just decoration.. Is it okay to gift a 2 year old practical stuff? I just don't want to give him anymore toys that he won't play with...
Thanks..

Honesty books and a few toys is enough. He does not need anymore.

Does he really need anything else? Sounds like plenty for a 2 year old already

SleepingStandingUp · 25/02/2019 12:50

The toothbrush holder seems a little unusual for a 2 yo present if I'm honest. I'd tend to get things he needs as he needs them, even if it means buying in the sale and storing.
Is it a canvas he'll like? As in favourite cartoon or animals etc or something you think will n enhance the room?

It sounds either like money is really tight so you're getting him things he nerds cos you can't afford them separately or you have a set amount to spend and you're trying to fill it up.

Either way it's OK to spend less.

My partner and I are getting married a few days after my son's birthday so things are tight money wise at the moment with paying for our wedding.. I just get stuck on what to get for him, he's into his cars but he has a box full of those, he barely plays with his other toys so I don't know what to do lol. Not just that but we had a comment last year about how we didn't get our son enough stuff, it makes me feel like I'm a bad parent sometimes..

Ignore the "not enough" crap, you don't need to buy X presents or spend Y, you need to get something he'll like.
So books to read together are great, you can make a call on the other stuff (toothbrush holder and canvas etc)
How about a car garage? Look in Spock or FB selling sites or local charity shops? That's what we did for Xmas as I didn't want to spend £50 on one. We also picked up an awesome hand made castle for his birthday from a charity shop randomly but I don't actually know where we can out it 😂

PinkSquidgyPig · 25/02/2019 14:38

At that age I was buying most toys from the charity shop (including birthday presents) DD didn't know the difference. Although she did call the local charity shop 'the toy shop'!!
Family and friends buy more than enough presents for the day. She's always had plenty of toys/educational games and I'd buy large things as and when needed. E.g a scooter in 6-12 months. Don't get it now, but that's his main present and you've got time to save for it.

Kez4 · 25/02/2019 14:46

Sounds to me like you have got him more than enough and it certainly sounds like he doesn't go without, there's not set number of items a child should open nor a set amount a parent has to spend, relax and enjoy the up coming events you have 😊
If he's any thing like my children the paper and boxes will provide more entertainment than the actual item in them lol good luck for you wedding day x

I think that is plenty OP. My DS turned 2 in Jan and he loved opening the gifts more than anything and still asks us for "more presents" nearly 2 months later.

Just wrap it all individually and I bet you'll have a very happy child!

Thanks for the advice everyone, I've decided on getting him a toy washing machine since he's fascinated with the real one and leave it at that. He does have a lot to open when I brought everything out (I may have gone overboard on books lol) thanks :)
