Baby clothes shrinking!

How do I prevent my baby clothes from shrinking?! It doesn't matter if I use a mixed cycle or the babycare cycle or wash at 30 or 40 its the same result.

We have clothes from Asda, M&S, Next, Morrison's and Sainsbury's and they ALL do it. The difference is remarkable held up against a new previously unwashed item.

What am I doing wrong?

Plus the softness disappears completely. Its not rough but its certainly a lot harsher on baby's skin than brand new. How can I keep the 'newness' feel for longer?

Feel like I am ruining all my daughters clothes! Though its mainly just sleepsuits at this stage.

I only machine wash and then hang dry.

I don't have a tumble dryer although sometimes I have a dehumidifier on to speed the process up.

I feel your pain @KAT1903 . I have a 4 month old who is wearing 6-9 clothes even though he's not that big because everything shrinks!! I took some back to Next recently because they'd only been washed once and had shrunk by several inches. Unfortunately I have no addict for you though. I do tumble dry all mine, and thought it must have been because of that, but as you don't, maybe it's not?! I sympathise with you and can only suggest buying larger sizes to accommodate for the shrinkage.

I was my babies clothes on 30 for 30 minutes. I then spin dry for 9 minutes and put them on the airer. I've never had baby clothes shrink, I also use comfort and the clothes are always lovely and soft

Hmm I just lob my babies clothes in with everything else on a 40 and sometimes a tumble dry. Never had any shrinkage.

Need more info. What washing machine/powder/fabric softener etc?

Stuckforthefourthtime · 24/02/2019 19:51

If that's the temperature then it must be tumble drying surely? M&S are the worst culprits for me, I like their clothes and the quality is great other than the shrinkage! So glad it's nearly time for full time line drying instead of the machine.
Are you using fabric conditioner?

KAT1903 · 24/02/2019 20:01

I have a Logik washing machine. I mainly use a Mixed cycle to accommodate all materials as other stuff gets bunged in with babies. Temp is 40 - spin rate 1000 I don't know if this is maybe too strong? The Babycare cycle is temp 60 and spin 1000 so I would've thought the higher the temp the worse it would be but more often than not we use the mixed.

We shop at Aldi so use Almat Non Bio super concentrated liquid wash. I have never used fabric softener on anything in my life so wouldn't know where to start on choosing one and whether it would make a considerable difference.

I can't understand how some folk seem to have no problems at all and then mine it all does it. I surely can't be that unlucky with clothes from every shop!

Fabric softener defiantly works a treat so try that. Comfort is good for babies skin.

I know it’s laborious and some people don’t see the point but do you iron the clothes?

KAT1903 · 24/02/2019 20:52

I can't remember the last time I used my iron for any clothes let alone my daughters. I would though if it was going to help?

I just use bigger than needed. Then I can just tumble dry the shit out of them and they fit just fine Grin
