Please describe your 1 year old's nappies

I'm not a poo troll but I can't work out if my 1 year old has CMPA or other sensitivities or not.

Before solids, she frequently had mucousy vinegar smelling poos and a couple of episodes of blood which led to a suggestion of CMPA from a paediatrician. I cut out all dairy and soy as breastfeeding and was absolutely religious about it for at least six weeks although we didn't really see a difference. At one stage I cut out all top 8 allergens and we added a probiotic and suddenly her poos seemed to settle down, although that also coincided with her eating more and more solids.

She has always though had one explosive nappy or two a week, still solid but loose and slightly acidic. The rest are normal poo smelling poos. I gradually introduced top 8 back into her food and eventually me although I still avoid dairy and soy generally.

It doesn't seem to make a difference what she has and how much, she had some cheese the other day and seemed fine just the usual bad nappy four days later (I know it can be a delayed reaction but that seems very delayed.)

I've tried a food diary and found no obvious correlation. She eats a fair quantity and quite a varied diet and is happy to eat what we have although I reduced fibre a little in case it was irritating her little gut.

Is this just her or should I try ruling things out again? I'm struggling to maintain my own weight and would love to just add dairy back in. Also, I want her to have dairy freely and not become intolerant although she does have a bit at least once a week so I can't see that being a problem.

It's very difficult to actually test for so drs have shrugged too. Maybe just teething?

Did she have any other symptoms of CMPA when she was younger? Like reflux, difficulty feeding or rashes? Have any of those eased with the changes in her diet?

NoReplacementsFoundhere · 24/02/2019 19:49

She didn't seem to have any other symptoms, except I suppose possibly silent reflux as she would be up every 45 minutes - but that's just a guess and we don't know for sure

My boys nappies are variable. Sometimes tiny and sticky, sometimes very loose. Generally they are 'normal' but he definitely has some super gross one's. Once or twice a week maybe. Nothing vinegary or mucuousy but they aren't always exactly the same. I'm not sure I expect his stools to always be the same though, my eldests we're not either.

Perhaps keep a food diary? If there doesn't appear to be a correlation, maybe it's just one of those things?

I think if she’s not being unwell, as the nappies are just occasionally, and it’s it causing her pain or anything, then it’s just random. My 16m old DD doesn’t appear to have any food allergies (and my 3 yr old DS is allergic to eggs and some other things so I’m aware of the symptoms etc). She can have the odd random yucky nappy and I just put it down to teeth/eating something random off the floor/too much fruit/bit of a bug. Basically who knows?! I’d probably reintroduce dairy slowly and see if there’s a noticeable difference.

And I’m not a medical person at all btw! Just a parent

My DS has horrific poos every now and then, but after much worry we figured out it was always related to teething. He is taking absolutely forever to cut teeth and when he is dribbly it usually means we need to brace ourselves for an epic poonami. Very acidic and he gets a really sore bum even if you change him within 1 or 2 mins. Metanium has been a saviour!
