Potty training nightmare

Hi all, I have a 3 year old, she is still in nappies. Has shown no interest what so ever in going on toilet/potty but has recently got a spotty bum, and dare I say a bit smelly and sweaty down there.
I thought id try and see how we would go today with toilet training.
Did a fluke wee first thing this morning and then stuck on some huggies training pull ups as I thought the wetness would help as normal nappies she would quite happily sit it wee or pooey nappy without telling me.
We have had about 8 wees and 2 poos all as accidents. Not one single attempt at telling me/going.
If I ask her if she needs to go she says no and refuses to sit on there. She then wets/poos and sits in it until I ask.
Please help! She will be in nappies at school at this rate

Oh crap book is very good. My DD is coming up 3 and is 16.5 kg and is over 90cm. We used the IKEA potties. She was quite a bit younger but she would still be using them now if they had not ‘disappeared’ a couple of weeks ago. Children are very flexible.

Don't take her to the potty every half hour - all this does is reduce bladder capacity meaning she won't be able to hold wee for any length of time she'll just be wanting to do small wees all the time
If a child is ready to potty train they should be only needing to wee every couple of hours - start off trying about every 90 minutes then increaSe this
It's really out of date advice to go every half hour and has only very short term benefits _ imagine how you'd feel if you had to go for a wee every half hour
Think of the bladder as a muscle that needs building up and working out - so regular drinks of water throughout the day and spaced out toilet visits
The bladder needs to fill so your child starts to get the signal to go for a wee

Also lots of praise for things like trying on the loo, drinking well , putting wet pants in the wash rather thN for dry pants as this can be disheartening

Another one to suggest you look at the Ikea potties, they are bigger than the potties my friends used. It's also a good idea to have them used to something portable, for the first couple of months they really can't hold it and tend to really dislike using anything unfamiliar - so you'll want something you can take to places like the park with you.

We didn't train DS until 3 years 3 months, so I think it would be OK to pause and try again in a few months. We didn't do bare bottoms - the bonus of trousers is it soaks up wee so you don't get much / anything on the floor. The other option if you are worried about your carpets would be to pick a week it's warm enough and spend all day in the garden.

Lots to think about, I really appreciate the comments.
I think I'm going to leave it until Easter half term and then get an IKEA potty and try again xx

We used Oh Crap too.

Couple of things that helped

  • remembering this is a big deal for the kid, you're changing a basic rule of their life and asking them to take ownership of a bodily function for the first time, it's possibly going to freak them out to begin with and there will be accidents along the way
  • big wipe-down oilcloth tablecloth on the floor plus towels, wipes and spare clothes handy
  • when out of naked phase, tuck trousers into socks to catch any poo-poos
  • get books about pooping and potties to read when they're on the potty

We didn’t use any specific method, although my friend used oh crap with lots of success so I loosely followed that.

Same as previous posters:
Few days at home. No nappies or pants, take to toilet every hour or so
Massive praise if they do anything on toilet. DS got one button for a pee and 2 for a poo
After a couple of days I stopped taking him or reminding him apart from if we were leaving the house or he hadn’t been for ages etc
We never used a potty and went straight to the toilet. Fortunately we have one on both floors in our house
Pull ups were literally for having to go out in that first week and straight off as soon as we got home. And the occasional long car journey. And for naps and bedtime of course.

We were very lucky and DS cracked it in a couple of days and has never really had an accident since. He was 2.9 when we trained him

And I do have friends that didn’t want to use the naked method and went with pull ups. I genuinely think it confuses them and they found the process takes longer. Yes you’re cleaning up pee off the floor, but for a couple of days, rather than taking much longer overall to train
