Newborn straining and groaning

Noob mum alert...

My 3wo DD is ebf, past week has started looking very uncomfortable during evening and night feeds. She doesn’t cry but groans, arches her back, throws her head around (taking my nipple with it), often her latch drops off and she is gnawing on my nipple. She seems fine when not nursing but sometimes she continues squirming a bit whilst i burp her.

I asked the midwife who just said it’s probably wind but often she does it from the moment she first latches on including when she’s just been winded? It’s unpleasant to watch as she looks sore and is making breastfeeding very drawn out and painful. Any thoughts on this or tips for helping her? Finding nights difficult atm due to this, TIA

Sounds like reflux. Take her to GP.

Thanks, we went to GP who prescribed gaviscon, hopefully that will help.

Ah glad you got an outcome. I heard Gaviscon is a bit of a pain to give to breastfeed babies. My DD had reflux and was prescribed ranitidine which is just a little bit of medicine in a syringe so easy to pop in her mouth. Worked really well so ask your GP for that if the Gaviscon doesn’t work.

Ah yes GP said I’d need to express milk to give with it, I’ll see how we go and bear the ranitidine in mind if it isn’t working for us, thanks again Smile
